Hello, I have a Microsoft Window 11 Pro and I would like to see how can I get the blacklight mode on for my laptop? Online it says it does, but all my F Keys do not work.

Keyboard backlight is not a Windows feature, but a hardware/firmware feature, and the instructions differ depending on brands and models.

What's the brand and model of your computer?

    Dear Summer Elkins,

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand how inconvenient this can be, especially when you need to type in low-light conditions and the keyboard backlight toggle is not responding. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in both the AI generated answer and the Independent Advisor’s answer on your thread. Those replies typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario. To help narrow this down, could you please share a few details?

    • The laptop brand and exact model.
    • Do you see a keyboard-backlight icon (a small keyboard with light rays) printed on any F key or on the Spacebar?
    • Does the keyboard backlight turn on briefly during startup (before Windows fully loads), or does it never light up?
    • When you press the F-keys, do they perform any actions (volume/brightness), or are they completely unresponsive?

In the meantime, please try these basic steps:

    1. Try the correct backlight shortcut
    • Look for a key with the backlight icon (often on an F key or Spacebar).
    • Press it several times to cycle through brightness levels.
    • If nothing happens, hold Fn and press the same key (Fn + [backlight key]). Some models require Fn while others do not.
    1. Check Fn Lock / Function key behavior
    • If your keyboard supports Fn Lock (often Fn + Esc on many devices), toggle it once and then retry the backlight shortcut.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help you enable the keyboard backlight on your Windows 11 Pro laptop. Wishing you a smooth experience getting the lighting working again so you can type comfortably in low-light settings and continue using your device without interruption.

On many newer Surface devices and some other laptops, the keyboard backlight is controlled by one of the top-row function keys, and the Fn key may need to be toggled first.

    1. Make sure the Fn layer is set correctly
      • On Surface devices, the top row has dual functions (special icons and F1–F12).
      • Press the Fn key once to toggle between function mode and special-keys mode (watch for an Fn indicator light if present).
    2. Try the backlight key
      • On newer Surface devices, the F5 key cycles through keyboard backlight levels (off → low → medium → high).
      • Press F5 repeatedly (and, if needed, with Fn toggled) to see if the backlight turns on.
      • On some older Surface models, F7 is used instead; if F5 does nothing, try F7 in the same way.
    3. If none of the F-keys work at all
      • Check for Windows updates: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install all updates. Missing firmware/driver updates can cause special keys (including backlight) not to function.
      • If the keyboard is detachable (Surface Pro Type Cover), ensure it is firmly connected and check for keyboard-specific updates using the Surface app as described in the keyboard troubleshooting article.
      • If special keys still do not respond after updates, test with an external keyboard. If the external keyboard works, the built-in keyboard may have a hardware issue and might need service.

If the device is not a Surface, the exact backlight key can differ by manufacturer; in that case, check the laptop’s support page for the specific backlight key and any required keyboard/firmware drivers.
