Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
In the new Outlook for Windows, the correct way to report phishing is to use the built-in Report button rather than forwarding to an email address.
- Select the suspicious message (from any folder where it still exists).
- On the ribbon, choose Report.
- Select Report phishing (or Report junk if appropriate).
When a message is:
- Reported as phishing: It is deleted from the mailbox.
- Reported as junk: It is moved to Junk Email, and the sender is added to the Blocked Senders list.
The error about not being able to report "from your own address" occurs because the system treats that scenario as self-reporting, which is blocked. The built-in Report button sends the message to Microsoft and/or the organization’s reporting mailbox automatically, based on admin User reported settings, so no manual forwarding is required.
Since the email is already gone from Junk and Deleted Items, there is nothing more to report for that specific message. For any future suspicious emails:
- In Outlook (Windows, new Outlook, Outlook.com, or Microsoft 365 Outlook): select the message and use Report > Report phishing.
- Do not forward the message; the built-in reporting handles submission and removal in one step.
If using a non-Outlook email client in the future, the guidance is to attach the original phishing email to a new message and send it to the appropriate Microsoft reporting address, but in Outlook the built-in Report button is the recommended and fastest method.
