Edge Downloads Pin button is missing (still)

To be 100% clear at this point, this is not the ability to pin the download button to the toolbar - this is the Pin that should be there on the drop down for Downloads to pin this to the right-hand side of Edge (highlighted on this screenshot from another user/PC):

On all my PCs, this is showing as follows:

which means that you can't pin it to the right-hand side of Edge (as you can with Favourites and History). From memory, this was its normal behaviour in the very first versions of it under Chromium, and it seems to have reverted on some devices/accounts for no apparent reason.

I have reported through Feedback Hub AND Edge feedback, but it is still stuck in this mode - I have tried Resetting Edge, deleted the cloud data, repairing Edge and all the latest updates --- and it still behaving this way.

How do we get support from Microsoft to fix this as they appear to be ignoring the issue for those of use still having this issue.

Bringing together a couple of my comments, as I think I now have an idea what is happening:

It isn't Edge version specific - some of my machines/accounts are fine while others are not, and some where different accounts on the same machine behave differently - so it is somehow part of the Edge user profile information.

To try to work out what is going on, I setup a VM with Windows 11 25H2 (26200.6584) and connected Edge to my account where I am having this issue, and the download pinning is working. I then forced a Reset Sync Data from Microsoft Servers to make sure the cloud data was "clean"

I think this might be something that got "baked in" to Windows through multiple updates as, when "jumping" from the 25H2 ISO from October 2025 to the latest non-insider update, there does not seem to be an issue.

UPDATE 1: the problem came back on one machine after some updates came through, so this might not be the total fix

UPDATE 2: after further testing, some steps may not be required

~~The fix I thought I had was as follows...~~

Pre-requisites: have a system restore point and/or backup; download a copy of the Edge installer; if you are NOT sync'ing to the cloud, export your favourites, passwords and make a note of your extensions, etc. Note that cookies will be cleared by this process. Also, it is worth downloading the Edge installer from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/downloadSteps (maybe needed for each account on a machine):

~~Using an Administrator account~~

~~In Settings, go to Accounts / Other Users and add a simple local account~~

~~Logon to the user account with the issue~~

~~In Task Manager, select Processes, search for Edge and End Task on the Microsoft Edge set of processes~~

~~In RegEdit, navigate to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Edge and delete this key (after exporting it)~~

~~In Explorer, navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft and delete the folder Edge~~

~~Logoff from this account for now (not sure if this needed, but this is what I did)~~

~~Logon to the new Local Account you setup in step 2~~

~~Complete the OOTB experience, start Edge and tell it to sync to the account you're having issues with~~

~~Check that Downloads "pin to the right-hand side" is there - if not, other issues and "roll back" 5 & 6~~

~~Logoff from this account for now (not sure if this needed, but this is what I did)~~

~~Logon to the user account with the issue~~

~~Run the Edge Installer to make sure it is fully setup/repaired (not sure if this is needed, but I did this)~~

~~Start Edge and allow it to logon and sync~~

~~Check that the pin to right-hand side is there and working~~

~~Logoff, logon and test again - maybe reboot machine and test again~~

If you have other accounts on the machine, check each of them - you might need to do the same process for all of these accounts as I found (on one machine) that fixing one account seemed to have caused the same problem on another, although I can't be 100% sure about that.

~~Once all the accounts on that machine have been fixed, go back in using an admin account and you can delete the temporary local account(s) you created from Settings / Accounts / Other Users.~~

HOWEVER after less than one day and some Windows updates, the problem reoccurred on first one machine and then others - and even after applying the above, the problem reoccurs during the initial sync process --- so it seems certain that there is something getting put up into the SYNC DATA IN CLOUD which then causes this issue on the same account on other machines.

Not a fix, but some key information that I hope will point to a proper fix:

Deleting the %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data folder after killing all Edge processes, disconnecting the network and restarting Edge using a local profile seems to at show the "pin to right hand pane" for Downloads correctly.

On some machines, the issue comes back after starting Edge after you have reconnected to the network and, in all cases (if the sync'd data is bad) as soon as you connect Edge to the "bad" user profile.

The issue therefore looks to be related to:

some data/settings being synchronised with the Edge sync cloud store which switches on this incorrect (hiding the "pin downloads to right hand pane" pin) behaviour which then gets stored locally on the PC in the %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data folder. Interestingly, it does not seem to be anything stored in the profile-specific data in this folder (e.g. Default) because, if you just delete this profile's folder (%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default in this example) then the issue still occurs if you then setup a non-sync'd profile.

there also seems to be something in some machine configs, which is maybe related to PCs that have had multiple updates since a fresh build, and maybe just to those affected by the Beta release being sent to those on the Release Preview ring which needed the update to be reverted to get them back to their correct state.

Microsoft, if you are listening, please can this be investigated further to determine what setting/data is being passed around to cause this issue, so that those of use facing this problem can get a resolution that "sticks".

Hi,

I have Edge Beta version 146.0.3856.20 and it looks like the issue has been resolved there, so the fix is likely on the way to the stable release. This is how it looks like in Beta

In the meantime, you can click the three dots in the Downloads flyout and choose “Show in toolbar” to pin it to the toolbar.

Thanks for this. Had you seen this issue on the beta at any time? as I have some PCs where the pin is there correctly.

My personal observation has been Edge for Business is missing the push pin, while "regular" Edge has it. Updated Edge for Business today to Version 145.0.3800.82 (Official build) (64-bit) and its still missing push pin, so seems "by design" by some progammer who does not use Edge ;)

From what I have tested, it doesn't seem to be version or edition specific - some of my machines/accounts are fine while others are not - and some where different accounts on the same machine behave differently. And sometime, after an update, the pin will be there immediately after the update but will disappear the next time Edge is opened.

Having tested all sorts of scenarios (including comparing registry entries as far as I can) I don't think it is as simple as registry or the Edge cloud settings, as I have created the user on Windows 11 on a VM, started Edge and the problem happens after Edge has sync'd. I have also tried deleting the Edge cloud storage, but it came back even then. Having said that, I'm not sure exactly how resetting the Edge cloud storage works if you have Edge on Android in the mix.

Confused as to why the code path and/or resources that has this pinless-dialog actually still exist in Edge - there are no settings or policies that can take the option to "pin to the right" away from a user, so why this isn't simply hard-baked into the code by now really doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, quite confused and really quite annoyed by this all.

Update: it is looking like this might be an issue related to multiple Windows Updates over the months maybe also with the issue of a beta update being installed on the Release Preview (error by Microsoft) needing a rollback to fix!

To test if this is carried across just by the cloud sync, I setup a VM with Windows 11 25H2 and connected Edge to my account where I am having this issue, and download pinning is working, implying cloud sync is not the cause/only issue.

Having done some more testing, there is something related to the Edge profile in the cloud and the local state of the PC - it appears that doing a "hard reset" of Edge (remove the user registry and files) and then setting up another (can be local) user to start Edge off with the same account will allow a reinstall of Edge (just to be sure) on the original account to then work.

If anyone from Microsoft watching this might point at something around the underlying issue and maybe a way to fix the cloud sync data/registry/user data on any affected machines.

I found references to the push pin item in a file called "Preferences" (no extension) in the "Profile X" folder i.e. "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Profile 1\Preferences", the "Preferences" file will open with Notepad++.

Screenshot shows fresh launch of Edge with pin functional ("show_downloads_hub_pinned":true), after closing edge and reopening the variable has changed ("show_downloads_hub_pinned":false). I cannot find what it changing that and of course just editing that file to true, does not work.

In order to restore the push pin I had to delete "\user data" folder, deleting "\profile 1" was not enough, but this "fix" only lasts until i close edge then the push pin is gone.

So the function/parameter exists but it being ignored, supressed, or other for some reason not honored. Prob some corp exec shared screen during teams meeting and had list of p.o.r.n in downloads list, so can't have that happen again ;)
