Hi Thor Emil Brandrud,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Seeing “your IT administrator has blocked access” on a private PC is definitely confusing. Here’s what to check that can possibly salvage it:

1 - Microsoft Defender Web protection

  • Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows security
  • Go to App & browser control > Turn OFF Reputation‑based protection
  • Or click Reputation‑based protection settings > turn OFF temporarily:
    • SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
    • Potentially unwanted app blocking

Disclaimer: Temporarily turning off real-time protection may make your device vulnerable to threats. So please turn it on immediately once the issue is fixed.

2 - Make sure no Work/School account is connected

  • Open Settings > Accounts > remove all other accounts under:
    • Emails & accounts
    • Access work or school.
  • Check in Passkeys to make sure no accounts linger around
  • Also sign out of applications (e.g. Office, Microsoft Store...)

If possible, it’d be helpful if you can check that this happened on all browsers, or only one (and which is it?) What are the specific sites that made appearances?

If you're receiving a message that access has been blocked by your IT admin while trying to access certain web pages, it could be due to the settings in Windows Defender or other security features that are in place on your device. Even if you do not have a dedicated IT admin, Windows Defender may have certain configurations that restrict access to potentially harmful sites or content.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check Windows Defender Settings: Open Windows Defender and review the settings related to web protection or content filtering. Ensure that it is not set to block access to the sites you are trying to visit.
    2. Disable Web Protection Temporarily: If you feel confident, you can temporarily disable web protection in Windows Defender to see if that allows you to access the pages. Remember to re-enable it afterward for your safety.
    3. Review Network Settings: Sometimes, network configurations can lead to access issues. Ensure that your network settings are correctly configured.
    4. Check for Browser Extensions: Certain browser extensions can also block access to specific sites. Disable any extensions that might be causing this issue.
    5. Contact Support: If the problem persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.

If you are using Microsoft Edge, it may also display block pages for sites deemed dangerous, which could be part of the issue you are experiencing.
