Hidden text being hidden suddenly causing formatting issues in subsequent (not hidden) paragraph

We have been using the hidden text feature in our specifications for decades. We rely on it. Suddenly, today in Word 365 it is broken. This is happening in multiple documents, on multiple machines, on different networks, in different cities. The only commonality is Word 365 and the use of hidden text.

What is happening is that when the hidden text is not displayed the hidden text is impacting the border and numbering formats of the subsequent paragraph, where the border and numbering format of the hidden paragraph is substituted for the border and numbering format of the following paragraph when the document is previewed or printed. Everything is correct when the hidden text is displayed.

It appears that this has been fixed in update 2602.

Still having this problem in build 2604, but discovered what may be causing the issue.

Go to File>Options>Advanced then scroll towards the bottom and look for a box checked next to Don't us HTML paragraph auto spacing. Uncheck the box and the spacing corrects itself.

It looks like if the Word document was created in a version before Microsoft Word 2000 that box checked. Another way to change this is to change the document layout Lay out this document as if created in: under the Compatibility options for: section, and select a more recent version of Word. This changes many of the checkbox settings so pay attention if you have settings you like so you can reselect them.

The issue appeared to have resolved itself on Friday, 2/27/26. Between Friday afternoon and today we've tested successfully on multiple computers with Version 2512 (Monthly Enterprise Channel).

Microsoft officially updated their case today, 3/2/26, to indicate the issue has been fixed by a service change. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/heading-numbering-disappears-after-applying-style-separator-in-word-535fed39-64eb-4ac1-a2c6-48f15dfd5ed5

This issue appears to have been fixed by Microsoft yesterday morning. I can personally confirm that on machines with 2601 and 2602, the issue no longer appears. Trying to gather more feedback. If you were experiencing this issue, please test again and confirm here with your version number.

We are also experiencing this issue with 2601 Build 16.0.19628.20214.

Can confirm that rolling back to an earlier version works.

The draft layout and Track changes work arounds work as well, but are not ideal for our use case.

Has the OP gotten anywhere with MS support in escalating this to a formally recognized bug?
