How to deploy an Azure Developer CLI (azd) template from VS Code for the Web (vscode.dev/azure)?

I’m opening an Azure Developer CLI template using VS Code for the Web (Azure mode) with the following URL:

https://vscode.dev/azure?azdTemplateUrl=https://github.com/Azure-Samples/get-started-with-ai-agents&tenantId=<tenant-id>&subscriptionId=

The repository is Azure-Samples/get-started-with-ai-agents, which includes infrastructure and application code intended to be deployed using azd.

The template loads correctly in vscode.dev, and I can browse and edit the files. However, I’m unsure about the correct workflow to deploy from VS Code Web:

The subscriptionId parameter is empty in the URL.

The integrated terminal in VS Code Web does not clearly support running azd up.

It’s not clear whether full azd provisioning is supported directly in the browser or if a local environment or GitHub Codespace is required.

Questions

Is it officially supported to run azd up and deploy Azure resources directly from VS Code for the Web?

If yes, how should the Azure subscription be selected when subscriptionId is not provided in the URL?

If not, what is the recommended approach?

Clone locally and run azd?

Use GitHub Codespaces?

Use Azure Cloud Shell?

I’m looking for the recommended Microsoft-supported workflow for deploying this type

of azd template.

Running azd up directly from VS Code for the Web (vscode.dev) is not officially supported for deploying Azure resources. The integrated terminal in VS Code Web may not fully support the necessary commands for provisioning and deployment with azd.

The recommended approach for deploying an Azure Developer CLI template would be to use either GitHub Codespaces or a local environment. Both options provide the necessary tools and environment setup to run azd commands effectively.

    1. GitHub Codespaces: This option allows you to work in a cloud-based development environment where all prerequisites, including the azd Visual Studio Code extension, are installed for you. You can easily run azd up and manage your Azure resources from there.
    2. Local Environment: You can clone the repository to your local machine and run azd up from your terminal. This requires having the Azure Developer CLI installed locally.
    3. Azure Cloud Shell: This is another alternative where you can run Azure CLI commands directly in your browser, but it may not provide the same level of integration as using Codespaces or a local setup.

Regarding the subscriptionId, if it is not provided in the URL, you would typically need to specify it manually in your deployment commands or through the Azure portal once you have set up your environment.

In summary, for deploying the azd template, using GitHub Codespaces or a local environment is the best Microsoft-supported workflow.
