New Outlook - Email not sent / delayed when choosing "Share as attachment" from application

If we use the File \ Share \ Email \ Send as Attachment. The email is not sent until we open Classic Outlook. Tried changing all the Settings \ Apps \ Default to New Outlook and it still opens the window to Classic Outlook. The finding is that the email is place in the Classic Outlook Outbox and it is sent if I open Classic Outlook. If the user only use New Outlook the email remains in the Outbox for Classic Outlook / or in some cases sent later. For the users who experiencing that it is sent days later, it is unconfirmed if the user has opened Classic Outlook at that point.

Question: Anyone know if the will this be fixed soon? I have only been able to find that other people have reported it, but cannot find anything in the Feedback log, nor in the O365 roadmap and was suggested to open my own thread.

Question: Is there a way to disable send the attachment from within Word, Excel, PowerPoint to ensure that the user does it directly by creating a new email in New Outlook to ensure it is sends the email right away?

Tagged as Microsoft 365 and Office, and other as Outlook is not part of the list and the tag Outlook, with Windows as a child is not working.

Hi Inger Christensen,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Thanks for sending the details and screenshots — that really helps me a lot.

This behavior matches how Office “Send as Attachment” works today: Word/Excel/PowerPoint use the legacy Windows mail handoff (MAPI), which Classic Outlook supports. New Outlook is essentially a web-based app (PWA) and doesn’t support that same local handoff, so Office routes the action through Classic Outlook instead.

Quick heads-up: If the message is created in Classic Outlook, it will sit in Classic Outlook’s Outbox and won’t send until Classic Outlook is opened. It’s easy to assume it’ll send in the background, which can explain the “days later” timing.

Workaround for New Outlook users: Start the message in New Outlook, then attach the file (Attach button or drag & drop).

Tip: Attach the file using the Attach button or by dragging it in from File Explorer or OneDrive. Or, if it fits your workflow, use Office “Send a link” instead of “Send as attachment.”

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.

I'm looking forward to your reply.
