I am familiar with the Design/Watermark/Remove instruction in Word, however this isn't removing the watermark. Any suggestions?

I am familiar with the Design/Watermark/Remove Watermark instruction in Word to remove a watermark, however the watermark isn't budging. Any suggestions?

A somewhat simpler response:

  1. Go to a page with the stubborn watermark.
  2. Edit the header.
  3. Select the watermark by clicking on it.
  4. Press delete.
  5. Go to the next header.

If you still have a problem watermark, repeat as necessary.

All watermarks in Word are graphics in headers. They may or may not be identified by Word as a watermark by a special container. The procedure above will eliminate any and all watermarks.

Dear @Annette Ellis,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, I understand that when you choose Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark, but it doesn’t work. For reference: Remove a watermark

Therefore, to help us identify why the watermark isn’t being removed, could you please confirm the following:

  • Which version of Microsoft Word are you using (Windows or Mac, and Classic Word or the new Word experience)?
  • Does the document contain multiple sections (for example, different headers or page layouts)?
  • Is the file protected by a Sensitivity Label, Rights Management, or provided from an organizational template?
  • Does the watermark appear on every page or only specific pages?
  • Did this document originate from another user, system, or template outside your organization?
  • Are you seeing any error message when trying to remove the watermark? If possible, could you share a screenshot of what you’re seeing?
  • Does the same watermark issue occur if you open the document on a different device or when signed in with a different account?

In the meantime, here are some steps I recommend you try:

Step 1: Remove the watermark from the header

Double‑click near the top of the page to open Header & Footer view > Move your pointer over the watermark until it shows a selection frame > Click to select it, then press Delete.

Step 2: Confirm it isn’t a picture or shape

In some cases, the watermark is actually a picture or WordArt inserted manually. Go to Layout > Selection Pane, look for large background images or shapes, and delete them (if possible).

Step 3: Verify labels or protection

If the document is using a Sensitivity Label or protection policy, the watermark may be enforced by that policy and can only be removed by changing or removing the label (if you have permission).

Step 4: Copying content into a new blank document

If the watermark still cannot be removed after these steps, the document is likely using a template‑ or policy‑based watermark, in which case copying content into a new blank document. Or you can try: Insert your document into another file

Moreover, if a Microsoft 365 application such as Word or Excel isn't working correctly, sometimes restarting it will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you can try repairing it. When you're done, you might need to restart your computer.
