How can I turn on and use AutoSave for Microsoft Word and Excel without signing into OneDrive

I have seen this question a bit, but the latest answer from May 2025 was ambiguous. I would like to turn on AutoSave and use this feature without signing into OneDrive. I have the correct boxes checked for where I want my files to go and have checked that I want it saved every 10 minutes. However, when I turn on AutoSave, it automatically directs me to use my OneDrive account. I don't have a OneDrive with my university email address, but do have Microsoft Office for education, so the free version. When the system can't access my non-existent OneDrive account, the AutoSave toggle reverts back to off.

Is there a way to override this? I have to use my uni account to keep the free version of Office, but I don't have a OneDrive account. I can make a OneDrive account using hotmail for the purposes of the AutoSave, but then would I lose the uni access to Office?

It would be amazing if the two weren't linked since they don't have to be. If I can AutoSave to any directory of my choosing, I should be able to turn on and use AutoSave without signing into One Drive.

Dear @NotForYou,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I completely understand how frustrating this situation can be especially when you just want AutoSave to work smoothly without needing to sign in to OneDrive.

To clarify, the way Microsoft Office is designed can definitely feel confusing:

  • The AutoSave feature in the Office 365 applications is only available for files saved to OneDrive.
  • Signing in to a personal OneDrive (Hotmail/Outlook) will not affect or remove your access to your Office 365 Education license. You can be signed into Office with your university account and signed into OneDrive with a different personal account that setup works normally.

Alternative, there is a workaround that might help reduce the inconvenience, please try and check if it helps for you:

To open and save files to Microsoft OneDrive from Excel, PowerPoint, or Word, you need to add OneDrive as a connected service.

Open your Microsoft 365 app.

  1. Go to File then Account.
  2. Select Add a service then Storage.
  3. Choose OneDrive.
  4. Complete the sign-in steps for the account you are trying to add.

Please follow the steps in the Microsoft Support article How to add OneDrive as a service. When you turn on AutoSave in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, the app will prompt you to choose a OneDrive location. At that point, you can select your OneDrive Personal account.

However, to make sure everything works correctly, please sign in to both accounts (your education account and your personal OneDrive account) inside the Office apps. This ensures AutoSave can upload files to the correct OneDrive location.

After you finish connecting, your personal account will appear here:

AutoSave in Microsoft Word and Excel is designed to work primarily with files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online. As per the current functionality, AutoSave cannot be enabled without signing into OneDrive. If you attempt to use AutoSave without a valid OneDrive account, it will revert to off, as you have experienced.

Unfortunately, there is no way to override this requirement to use AutoSave without a OneDrive account. If you create a OneDrive account using a different email (like Hotmail), it should not affect your access to Microsoft Office through your university account. However, you will need to ensure that your files are saved in OneDrive to utilize the AutoSave feature.

If you want to save files to a local directory or another location, you will have to save manually, as AutoSave is specifically tied to cloud storage solutions provided by Microsoft.
