I have installed Microsoft Office 2021 Pro Plus on my new laptop. I have imported a .pst file containing all the e-mails from my old computer, all good! When I try to delete older e-mails in some folders I get the error message, "You do not have appropriate permission to delete this e-mail." Any ideas?

Got it. Try exporting the PST into a BRAND-NEW PST

This is not the same as re-importing the same file. Exporting rewrites every message and folder, stripping the bad flags.

    Steps

    • Open Microsoft Outlook
    • File → Open & Export → Import/Export
    • Choose Export to a file
    • Select Outlook Data File (.pst)
    • Select the entire imported PST (top level)
      Check Include subfolders
    • Save as a new PST (new filename, new location)

    Close Outlook

    Reopen Outlook

    • Remove the old PST

    Open the new PST

Thanks for sharing the details! The PST Was Imported as “Read-Only”

Even though it looks normal, Outlook sometimes mounts imported PSTs as read-only.

    Try this:

    Close Outlook

    Go to:

    C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\Outlook Files

Right-click the .pst file → Properties

Make sure Read-only is NOT checked

    Click Apply → OK

Reopen Outlook and try deleting again

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

The error message "You do not have appropriate permission to delete this e-mail" may occur due to several reasons related to permissions on the folders or items in Outlook. Here are some potential causes and solutions:

    1. Folder Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to delete items in the specific folder. If the folder is shared or part of another user's mailbox, you may need to check with the owner to confirm your permissions.
    2. Act As Account Permissions: If you are using an account that acts on behalf of another account (like in shared mailboxes), you may need to ensure that the Act As account has the appropriate permissions to delete items in that folder. You can do this by granting full mailbox permissions or specific folder permissions using PowerShell commands like Add-MailboxPermission or Add-PublicFolderClientPermission.
    3. Private Items: If the emails you are trying to delete are marked as private, you may not have the permissions to delete them. Check the properties of the emails to see if they are marked as private.
    4. Corrupted PST File: Sometimes, the PST file itself may have issues. You can try repairing the PST file using the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) provided by Microsoft.

If the issue persists, consider reaching out to your IT department or Microsoft support for further assistance.
