Does Windows Update send daily definition updates?

My computer updates daily. I'm checking the update history in settings, and it shows daily definition updates for "Microsoft Defender Antivirus Security Smart Updates" for the past few days (the version number is different each day), sometimes daily, sometimes every few days. Why? Do I have to click "Check for updates" in Windows Security's Microsoft Defender section for security information to appear in Windows Update?

Yes, that is correct, Windows may install new Defender virus definitions most days, or if none are available, every couple of days, that is normal to ensure you are protected against any new malware found and usually the KB2267602 update will install automatically in the background when you are not busy or actively using your PC without you needing to check for updates.
