Speakers stopped working after latest MS software update. Using MS Settings, Sound Output device Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) I can see that Audio that is playing in browser is being displayed in the master Volume indicator. In this same sound screen is the Troubleshoot function which I used and it resulted in no resolution. Then ran the manual troubleshoot and it has been running for 4 hrs( just a spinning circle). Can someone provide instruction to resolve. Tried ChatGPT and it had me going in circles as well.

To resolve issues with Realtek High Definition Audio speakers that stopped working after a Windows update, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check Connections: Ensure that all audio endpoints are properly connected. This includes checking the physical connections of your speakers to the computer.
  2. Sound Control Panel: Open the sound control panel by typing mmsys.cpl in the Run dialog (Win + R). Make sure that your speakers are set as the default playback device. Right-click on the speakers and select "Set as Default Device" if they are not already.
  3. Device Visibility: In the sound control panel, right-click in the background and ensure that both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are checked. This will help you see if your speakers are recognized by the system.
  4. Test the Speakers: On the playback tab, right-click your speakers and select "Test" to see if you can hear audio. If the meter moves, the speakers are functioning.
  5. Update Drivers: Check for updates for your audio drivers. You can do this by going to Device Manager, expanding the "Sound, video and game controllers" section, right-clicking on Realtek High Definition Audio, and selecting "Update driver."
  6. Uninstall and Reinstall the Driver: If updating doesn’t work, try uninstalling the driver. Right-click on Realtek High Definition Audio in Device Manager, select "Uninstall device," and then restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
  7. Windows Troubleshooter: Since the built-in troubleshooter did not resolve the issue, you might want to try running it again after performing the above steps. Sometimes, running it after making changes can yield better results.
  8. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your system is fully updated. Sometimes, subsequent updates can resolve issues caused by previous ones.
  9. Check for Compatibility Issues: If the issue persists, it may be related to compatibility problems introduced by the update. You can check for safeguard holds on your device by going to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, further investigation into specific error messages or logs may be necessary.

Hey,

It sounds like you’ve already done a great job by reinstalling the Realtek driver using their installer. The change in the “Jack Information” section suggests that the new driver version may have altered how the ports are detected or configured which can sometimes cause audio routing issues.

To move forward please check that the correct playback device is set as default in your sound settings. Open the Realtek Audio Console (or HD Audio Manager if available) and confirm that the jacks are assigned correctly, such as green for speakers or headphones. If the options seem limited try toggling between the available configurations.

Another useful step is to test with the Microsoft generic audio driver. You can do this through Device Manager by selecting “Update driver” then choosing “Browse” and “Let me pick” and selecting High Definition Audio Device (Microsoft) this helps rule out any Realtek-specific issues.

It’s also worth disabling audio enhancements in the sound settings under device properties as these can sometimes interfere after driver changes. Running the audio troubleshooter again can help identify any remaining issues.

If the problem persists check your BIOS or UEFI settings to make sure onboard audio is enabled as updates can occasionally reset these settings. Finally if none of these steps resolve the issue I recommend downloading the latest driver directly from your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page rather than the Realtek site as OEM-specific drivers often handle jack detection better.

Best regards,

Marcelo

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out about your Realtek High Definition Audio speakers not working after a recent Windows update. I understand how frustrating it can be when your audio stops working especially after trying the built-in troubleshooter without success. This issue often occurs due to driver conflicts or settings changes introduced by updates but there are additional steps you can take to resolve it.

One effective approach is to reinstall the audio driver completely start by opening Device Manager locate Realtek High Definition Audio under Sound, video and game controllers, right-click it and select Uninstall device. After uninstalling restart your computer so Windows can automatically reinstall the driver.

If the issue persists download the latest Realtek driver from your PC manufacturer’s support site or from Realtek’s official website and install it manually. This ensures compatibility with the latest Windows update. Additionally check the sound settings again to confirm that your speakers are set as the default playback device and that no enhancements are interfering with audio output.

Could you let me know if reinstalling the driver resolves the issue or if you still experience problems?

I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back

Regards,

Marcelo
