Subject: Outlook Classic CSV Import Fails / New Outlook Issues

Hi - your answer to connect worked. I have given up trying to retrieve my contacts. I have a csv file of a distribution list I need to use but I've been working through a number of Outlook issues and have narrowed them down.

    Environment

    • Windows 11
    • Microsoft 365 Outlook
    • Both Classic Outlook and New Outlook
    • Comcast account migrated to Yahoo authentication (works correctly now)

    Current Status

    1. Email is working

    • I can send and receive mail in both Classic and New Outlook.
    • Authentication is working.
    • The sender display name issue was corrected in Yahoo and updated Classic but NOT New.

    2. Contacts

    • My contacts exist in New Outlook.
    • I exported them to a CSV file.
    • The CSV opens correctly in Excel and contains approximately 162 contacts.
    • The file has been tested from both OneDrive and C:\Temp.

Problem #1 – Classic Outlook Import

When I try to import the CSV into Classic Outlook using:

File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Import from another program or file → Comma Separated Values

    I immediately receive:

A file error has occurred in the Comma Separated Values translator while initializing a translator to build a field map. Outlook was unable to retrieve the data from the file...

    This happens:

    • with different CSV files
    • from different folders
    • before the field mapping screen appears

It appears Outlook is failing before it actually reads the CSV.

Has anyone seen the CSV translator itself become corrupted?

Problem #2 – New Outlook Contact Lists

I also created several Contact Lists (distribution lists) in New Outlook.

    Sending to individual contacts works.

However, sending to Contact Lists is inconsistent:

    • some attempts fail before sending
    • messages remain in Drafts instead of Outbox
    • there is no SMTP error
    • it appears to fail before Outlook attempts to transmit the message

Is this a known issue with New Outlook Contact Lists?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

1 -- Export any "This Computer Only" folders

If you have any "This Computer Only" folders under your existing Comcast account with data that you need to keep (e.g. Contacts, Calendar) you must export them to a PST file since they will be lost when you remove the Comcast account.

For each "This Computer Only" folder do:

    • File -> Open & Export -> Import/Export
    • Export to a file, [Next]
    • Create a file of type: Outlook Data File (.pst), [Next]
    • Select a "This computer only" top level folder, [Next]
    • Browse to a folder on your computer where you want to save the PST file and name the file something you will recognize. (e.g. "Comcast Contacts", "Comcast Calendar"), [Finish]
    • Create Outlook Data File, {don't add any password}, [OK]

    Hi,

Outlook can’t connect to your IMAP server because something changed in the connection chain usually authentication requirements, cached credentials, or blocked ports. Even if settings look correct, the issue often comes from:

Updated security protocols (OAuth or app passwords).

Corrupted Outlook profile or stored credentials.

    Firewall/antivirus blocking IMAP ports.

    Server-side changes or downtime.

    What I suggest is:

Verify IMAP/SMTP settings and check if your provider now requires an app password.

Clear stored credentials in Credential Manager.

    Create a new Outlook profile.

    Temporarily disable antivirus/firewall and test.

Update Outlook and Windows for modern encryption support.

    I hope this helps!

If Outlook is unable to connect to your IMAP server, there are a few things you can check:

    1. Basic Authentication: Ensure that Basic authentication is enabled for your IMAP account. If it has been disabled, Outlook will not be able to connect. You can re-enable it using PowerShell commands if you have administrative access.
    2. Account Settings: Double-check your account settings, including the server address, port number, and security settings (SSL/TLS). Make sure they match the requirements provided by your email service provider.
    3. Network Issues: Verify that there are no network issues preventing Outlook from reaching the IMAP server. This can include firewall settings or issues with your internet connection.
    4. Outlook Profile: If you have already removed and reinstalled the account, consider creating a new Outlook profile to eliminate any potential corruption in the existing profile.
    5. Third-Party Add-Ins: Sometimes, third-party add-ins can interfere with Outlook's ability to connect. Try starting Outlook in safe mode to see if the issue persists. If it works in safe mode, consider disabling any unnecessary add-ins.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consult your email provider for further assistance.
