Updating to 24H2 or 25H2 severely throttles browser speed on sites like Youtube.

I have been subject to automatic Windows updates since April 2025. Each time an update to 24H2 or 25H2 completes, my buffer speed in Edge and Chrome are heavily throttled on Youtube. Before the update, I could stream at 1080p with an enhanced bitrate without issue. After the update, there is stuttering even at 480p.

I have tried updating all of my drivers, clearing my browsing history/cache, DNS flush and ipconfig commands, and reinstalling the browsers. The only thing that works is restoring my computer to a version of Windows prior to the update (23H2).

    Hi James Guo,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

Does the issue occur on Firefox as well?

Similar issue is more likely related to Chromium and affects Chromium-based browser.

Hi, I'm Stara. Please try these steps:

    1. Open Task Manager, go to Performance > Memory and look at the breakdown for In use, Standby and Available. This often explains where the missing memory is.
    2. Try starting Windows with a clean boot to see if any startup program or driver is causing the high usage. More info here https://support.microsoft.com/tr-tr/topic/windows-ta-temiz-%C3%B6ny%C3%BCkleme-ger%C3%A7ekle%C5%9Ftirme-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd.
    3. If you want to rule out hardware problems, you can run the Windows Memory Diagnostic:

It appears that you are experiencing performance issues with your browser after updating to Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2, particularly when streaming videos on platforms like YouTube. While the specific cause of the throttling you are experiencing is not detailed in the provided context, it is noted that there have been various resolved issues with Windows updates that could potentially affect application performance.

For instance, there was a mention of problems with NDI streaming performance after an August 2025 update, which caused severe stuttering and lag in streaming applications. Although this specific issue pertains to NDI, it suggests that there may be broader performance implications related to updates in these versions of Windows.

If you have already tried updating drivers, clearing browser cache, and reinstalling browsers without success, it might be beneficial to check for any additional updates or patches that Microsoft may release to address performance issues. Additionally, you can consider reporting your issue through the Feedback Hub app, as it allows users to communicate problems directly to Microsoft.

In the meantime, reverting to a previous version, as you mentioned, seems to be a temporary solution until a more permanent fix is available through updates.
