Outlook starting error - repair/reinstall/reset doesn't fix

Outlook on an Acer Windows laptop is constantly giving this message when starting the app: "Outlook is having trouble starting. How about starting with essential only?"

Regardless of if Yes or No is clicked, it will open, but will not then accept the log in. I have tried the repair function, the reset function, and uninstalled/reinstalled the app. The PC is regularly shut down, and a reboot makes no difference. Office 16 is installed, but not activated with a subscription; however this Outlook app is installed directly from the Windows Store.

The PC says it is up to date as at today, 11 Dec 2025.

How can we fix this?

New Outlook for Windows - Clear your Local State and Account Authentication cache.

Deletes all local configuration files and cache. Resets the application to a first-run state. You will have to add back all of your email accounts and go thru all of your email account authentication steps again.. (Does not touch your Outlook data. e.g. email, contacts, calendar).

1 -- Close any running New Outlook for Windows instances. (Make sure it's not hiding in your Taskbar).

2 -- Open a Windows Run dialog using either the Windows Logo Key + r (Win+r), or from the Start menu search for "Run".

4 -- In the Run dialog box type, or copy/paste, the command %LocalAppData%\Microsoft into the "Open:" text box and click [OK].

    User's image

4 -- In the Windows Explorer that opens, right-click the Olk folder and Rename it to Olk_OLD, right click and rename the OneAuth folder to OneAuth_OLD.

    User's image

If this doesn't fix the problem, you can revert to your previous configuration by deleting the Olk and OneAuth folders and renaming the _OLD versions back to their original names.

It seems that you are experiencing a persistent issue with Outlook not starting properly on your Acer Windows laptop. Given that you have already tried the repair function, reset function, and uninstalled/reinstalled the app, here are some additional steps you can take:

    1. Check Compatibility Settings: Sometimes, Outlook may have compatibility settings enabled that can cause issues. Locate Outlook.exe in the installation directory (usually found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\). Right-click on Outlook.exe, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and ensure that the Run this program in compatibility mode for option is unchecked.
    2. Repair Office Installation: Since you mentioned that Office 16 is installed but not activated, ensure that you perform a repair on the Office installation. You can do this through the Control Panel:
      • Open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
      • Select Microsoft 365 (or Office 2016) and click Change.
      • Choose Quick Repair and follow the prompts.
    3. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Windows and Office applications are fully updated. Sometimes, pending updates can cause issues with application functionality.
    4. Registry Check: If the issue persists, you may need to check the Windows registry for any incorrect settings related to Outlook. Be cautious when editing the registry, as incorrect changes can cause system issues. You can look for the subkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\WEF\Providers and check for any anomalies.
    5. Create a New User Profile: If none of the above solutions work, consider creating a new user profile in Windows. Sometimes, user profiles can become corrupted, leading to application issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance, especially since the app is installed from the Windows Store and may have specific requirements or issues related to that installation method.
