I would like to add a my hotmail account to my outlook account, but WITHOUT fingerprint, PIN or face, ONLY password. Every time I try to do this, I am FORCED to go through the fingerprint, PIN, face setup, which I DON'T want. Isn't this a bit coercive?

Hello Darren Clark, thanks for posting this in our community.

Unfortunately, you cannot bypass Windows Hello if your device or organization enforces it. This is by design for compliance and security. However, there is an option you can use. You can skip fingerprint and face setup and choose PIN only during Windows Hello setup. To do this, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Windows Hello PIN and set a PIN. This is still required, but it avoids biometrics.

When you add a Microsoft account (Hotmail/Outlook) to Outlook on Windows, the system enforces Windows Hello (PIN, fingerprint, or face) for security. This is part of Modern Authentication and Conditional Access policies designed to protect accounts from credential theft. Microsoft requires this because password-only sign-in is considered insecure and Windows Hello provides multi-factor authentication (MFA) at the device level.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli

To add an email account to Outlook without using fingerprint, PIN, or face recognition, you may need to adjust the settings related to app protection policies if you are using a managed device. Intune app protection policies can enforce biometric authentication for accessing apps, which might be why you are being prompted for these methods.

If your organization has set up these policies, you may need to contact your IT administrator to discuss the possibility of modifying these settings. If you are using a personal device and still facing this issue, ensure that your Outlook app is not enforcing any biometric settings that may require additional authentication methods.

In general, when setting up an account in Outlook, you should be able to enter just your email address and password if no additional security measures are enforced by your device or organization.
