Windows wakes up for no reason

Greetings,

My issue is that my display wakes up for no reason. And in doing so it emits a tone. It does it 24/7. I don't have to be anywhere near the computer. It's like moving the mouse to wake up the display. I have tried turning off any wake times, with no luck. It is annoying mostly at night. I have even tried to turn off the speakers, but the tone must be coming from the monitor. Not sure.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ted

Hi Ted,

This is April, I'll be happy to assist you. Sorry to hear that you're having issue with Windows 11 display. Let me help you out.

Based on the description of the issue you provided, your Windows 11 monitor keeps waking up on its own every few minutes, accompanied by a tone. you already disabled wake times and turned off speakers, but the sound seems to come from the monitor itself.

When the display wakes up and emits the tone, do you notice if any connected devices are active at that moment or does it happen even when all peripherals are disconnected?

Your monitor waking up randomly with a tone is usually caused by connected devices (USB, HID or network adapters) or background system events triggering wake signals. Simply turning off wake timers won't stop it, you'll also need to tweak device power settings, disable wake permissions and review scheduled tasks or driver activity.

Here's what you can try to fix the issue:

  1. Check recent wake sources
    • Open Command Prompt and run powercfg -lastwake to see what last woke the system
    • Run powercfg -devicequery wake_armed to list devices currently allowed to wake the PC.
  2. Remove wake permissions from input devices
    • In Device Manager go to Human Interface Devices
    • For each entry (mouse, keyboard, USB controllers) open Properties > Power Management and uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.
    • Several users on Reddit reported this stopped unexpected wakes.
  3. Adjust network adapter power settings
    • In Device Manager, open Network Adapters > Properties > Power Management and disable "Allow this device to wake the computer".
    • If available, also turn off "Wake on Magic Packet."
  4. Update monitor and GPU drivers
    • Install the latest GPU drivers from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel and update monitor firmware if the manufacturer provides it.
    • Outdated drivers/firmware can cause incorrect sleep/wake behavior.
  5. Inspect scheduled tasks
    • Open Task Scheduler and find tasks that have "Wake the computer to run this task enabled; disable that option.
    • Note: scheduled tasks can override system wake timer settings.
  6. Tone from Monitor
    • If the tone persists even when with speakers off, it's likely the monitor's internal alert when waking.
    • Check monitor settings (OSD menu) for "Power Save" or "Audio Alerts." Some monitors allow disabling this.

I hope this helps. If you need further assistance you can reply to this message.

Thank you,

April P.
