How do you get OneDrive installed for all users to work?

I have installed OneDrive on a system that multiple users log into, so I downloaded the latest version of the installer as of November 18th 2025, and installed it as an admin with the "OneDriveSetup.exe /allusers" command. Once installed, no one seems to be able to open the OneDrive.exe file in Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive. Nothing seems to be showing even in the Tast Manager. I can open the OneDrive.App.Exe, but that seems to be just for images and shows no files, but I think that is because it is logging into a Personal account and not a Work account (it did not give me an option when logging in). So, how do I get OneDrive.exe to install for all users and be able to open it?

    Hi @Daniel Cox,

    Thank you for your update.

If OneDrive is not opening up when you try to open it manually, you should follow these steps to double check the configuration settings:

    1- Check Registry Setting

    • Press Windows + R to open Run dialog box, type regedit and press OK to open Registry editor
    • In the search bar, paste this address to navigate to the correct path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive
    • Look for DWORD value named DisableFileSyncNGSC > right click and choose Modify > change value data to 0 > OK then close registry
    • You can refer to OneDrive won't start - Microsoft Support

    2- Try running OneDrive again

    • Press Windows + R to open Run dialog box, paste this path and press OK: C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
    • After resetting OneDrive, repeat the step and paste this path instead to try running OneDrive: C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /configure

Please proceed with the outlined steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If not, I’ll be glad to continue working with you to find a solution.

Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this process. Should you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out at any time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi @Daniel Cox,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your sharing, you did install OneDrive correctly with OneDriveSetup.exce /allusers. However, the OneDrive.exe does not automatically start for each user until they sign in and initialize their profile so OneDrive will be launched within each user's profile to start the configuration and sync process. The OneDrive.app.exe you opened is correctly not for business account but for personal account using for viewing photos and files.

You can follow this guideline to launch OneDrive for all users:

    1- Check Group policy

First checking Group Policy to correctly configure the settings

    • Press Windows + R to open Run dialog box > type gpedit.msc > OK
    • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive

    User's image

    • Carefully configure the policies in there to make sure OneDrive will work properly as you need.

    2- Check Registry Setting

Since you did say that manual start is not working, it's highly because that OneDrive is blocked by Registry setting.

    3- Manually launch OneDrive.exe

    • Using the users that previously can't open OneDrive and login to the device
    • Press Windows + R to open Run dialog box, paste this path and press OK: C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
    • This will pop up the OneDrive Setup window. Enter the user Work or School account email address to set up synchronization. Repeat the step for every user profile that will use OneDrive on the device
    • After finishing setup step, you can right click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar > Settings > Settings > unchecked "Start OneDrive automatically..."

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to your response.

To install OneDrive for all users on a system, you need to ensure that you follow the correct installation steps and configurations. Since you have already used the command OneDriveSetup.exe /allusers, here are some additional steps and considerations:

    1. Verify Installation: Ensure that OneDrive is installed correctly in the Program Files directory. You can check this by navigating to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\OneDrive and confirming that the OneDrive.exe file is present.
    2. User Permissions: Make sure that users have the necessary permissions to access the OneDrive application. Since OneDrive is installed per-machine, it should be accessible to all users.
    3. Starting OneDrive: To start OneDrive for all users, you may need to configure it to run at sign-in. You can do this by adding it to the startup programs. You can use the following command to configure OneDrive to start at sign-in for all users:
         REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /v OneDrive /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /background" /f

    4. Silent Configuration: If users are logging into a personal account instead of a work account, you might want to enable silent account configuration. This can be done by running the following command:
         REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive" /v "SilentAccountConfig" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

This will help in automatically signing users into their work accounts when they log in.
    5. Check Group Policy Settings: If your organization uses Group Policy, ensure that there are no policies preventing OneDrive from running or logging in with work accounts.
    6. User Account Configuration: If users still cannot access their work accounts, you may need to manually start OneDrive for each user by running OneDrive.exe from the Program Files directory or using the command %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe.

By following these steps, you should be able to get OneDrive installed and functioning for all users on the system. If issues persist, consider checking for any error messages or logs that might indicate what is going wrong during the startup process.
