Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Hi Lillian Horne,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum! I understand how frustrating and confusing it is to be locked out after trying to set up an alias.
Here are the rules for adding an alias:
- A maximum of 2 alias addresses can be added within a rolling 7-day period. to add more you need to wait for 7 days
- A maximum of 10 active alias address can exist on an account
- A maximum of 10 alias addresses can be created within the previous rolling 12-month period
Please try the following steps:
1. Clear browser cache and cookies (If login fails)
If the system still redirects you to the alias error screen, your browser may have cached the failed alias attempt.
- Clear the cache and cookies in the browser you are using.
- Restart the browser and go directly to Outlook.com, then try signing in with your original email address again (not the new @outlook alias).
2. Wait for the alias limit to reset
The error "We limit how frequently you can add aliases" means:
- You've tried to add multiple aliases in a short time
- Wait 7-10 days before trying to add more aliases
- This doesn't prevent you from signing in, it only prevents adding new aliases
3. If you still can't sign in with your original email
Open a private/incognito window, turn off VPN/proxy, and try again. If needed, reset the password using your existing recovery method (alternate email/phone):
- Go to: https://account.live.com/password/reset
- Enter your original Microsoft 365 email
- Follow password reset steps.

Thank you for your understanding and please let me know how it goes after trying these steps.
