Can't get into my outlook account

I had no problems getting into outlook using the email I signed up with for microsoft 365 and then it asked for me to set up an alias @outlook.com. When I did and tried to sign in, it will not accept it and keeps sending the message "We limit how frequently you can add aliases to your account. Please try again later." How do I get back into my outlook account?

Hi Lillian Horne,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum! I understand how frustrating and confusing it is to be locked out after trying to set up an alias.

Here are the rules for adding an alias:

  1. A maximum of 2 alias addresses can be added within a rolling 7-day period. to add more you need to wait for 7 days
  2. A maximum of 10 active alias address can exist on an account
  3. A maximum of 10 alias addresses can be created within the previous rolling 12-month period

Please try the following steps:

1. Clear browser cache and cookies (If login fails)

If the system still redirects you to the alias error screen, your browser may have cached the failed alias attempt.

  • Clear the cache and cookies in the browser you are using.
  • Restart the browser and go directly to Outlook.com, then try signing in with your original email address again (not the new @outlook alias).

2. Wait for the alias limit to reset

The error "We limit how frequently you can add aliases" means:

  • You've tried to add multiple aliases in a short time
  • Wait 7-10 days before trying to add more aliases
  • This doesn't prevent you from signing in, it only prevents adding new aliases

3. If you still can't sign in with your original email

Open a private/incognito window, turn off VPN/proxy, and try again. If needed, reset the password using your existing recovery method (alternate email/phone):

For more details, you can also check Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com - Microsoft Support

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thank you for your understanding and please let me know how it goes after trying these steps.
