Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Hi Sarah,
The password for a PST file is stored inside the file itself and isn’t linked to your Microsoft account or Windows credentials. Outlook simply prompts it when you try to open or import the file. If the password is lost, Outlook cannot decrypt the file because it’s designed to protect your data from unauthorized access.
What you can do is:
Check old notes or password managers If you ever saved the password in a password manager or wrote it down, that’s the easiest solution.
Try common passwords you used at the time PST passwords are often simple or based on old habits try variations of your old email address or patterns you commonly used.
Use a PST password recovery tool If you can’t find the password, there are reputable third-party tools that can recover or remove PST passwords by reading the file structure. Examples include:
Kernel PST Password Recovery
Stellar PST Password Recovery Make sure to download only from trusted sources to avoid security risks.
If the data isn’t critical You can start fresh with your new Outlook account and skip importing the old PST file.
Let me know how it goes, happy to help!
