Microsoft Word has the wrong page and text colouring by default

My issue doesn't have anything to do with the dark theme. I tried disabling it and it didn't fix my problem.

If I open a new document, the text colour will be automatically assigned as Grey and the page colour as black. If I press "no color" on Design tab it remains black and have to manually select the page to be white (every time I open a new document).

Also, without manually changing the page colour, if I change the text colour to black, the text simply disappears as it's blending into the page

If Word is started in application Safe mode, do you still see the dark page background? See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/open-office-apps-in-safe-mode-on-a-windows-pc-dedf944a-5f4b-4afb-a453-528af4f7ac72 .

Another thing to check: Do you have a high contrast Windows theme selected?

I'm wondering if the Normal style somehow as acquired black shading. In the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S), type in Normal (unless you already see that style name of course) and click Modify. In the dialog box, click the Format drop down and choose Border. In the Borders and Shading dialog box, go to the Shading tab and choose "No Color" for Fill. Confirm with OK.

User's imageAs you can see, dark mode is disabled, and "no colour" is selected.

You can also see that the text colour is automatically assigned as Grey because of the black paper.

I don't have any ideea why this happened because I don't remember thinkering with the settings or config.

The only (temporary) fix is manually assigning the page to be white.

Thanks for the follow-up. OK, since changing the Page Color doesn't work, something else might be wrong.

Could you upload a screen shot which illustrates what you see in Word?

Open the Normal template for editing, set the Page Color to "No color," save and close the template.

Do the following to open the template: Display the Run dialog box by holding the Windows logo key as you press R. In the dialog box, enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates and press Enter (or click the OK button).

In the File Explorer window, right-click Normal.dotm and choose Open. This opens the template for editing.

On the Design tab, click Page Color and then choose No Color.

    Save and close the template.
