Hello! Jill. Thanks for the details.

When a laptop’s internal microphone suddenly disappears (not just muted or quiet, but missing entirely), it’s usually caused by a driver, device, or privacy setting issue. Let’s go step by step to bring it back:

    1. Check if the microphone is hidden in Device Manager
    2. Press Win + X → Device Manager.

    Expand Audio inputs and outputs.

Look for something like “Microphone Array” or “Internal Microphone”.

    If you don’t see it:

Click View → Show hidden devices.

If it now shows but is greyed out, right-click → Enable device.

If it shows with a ⚠️ or ❌, note the error code (e.g. Code 10, Code 43).

If the microphone still doesn’t appear at all, continue below.

    1. Check Sound Settings
    2. Press Win + I → System → Sound.
    3. Scroll down to Input.
      • If no device appears, click “Add device” if available.
      • If it appears but isn’t default, click it and Set as default.
    4. Make sure microphone access isn’t blocked
    5. Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
    6. Make sure:
      • Microphone access is On.
      • Let apps access your microphone is On.
    7. Reinstall the audio driver

If the internal mic is missing, the driver may be corrupted.

    1. Back in Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    2. Right-click your audio device (e.g. Realtek Audio, Intel Smart Sound, Conexant, etc.) → Uninstall device.
    3. Restart your PC.
      • Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
      • If it doesn’t, go to the laptop manufacturer’s site and download the latest audio or chipset drivers.
    4. Check BIOS / UEFI settings (less common but worth checking)

Sometimes the mic can be disabled at the firmware level.

    • Restart your PC and press the BIOS key (often F1, F2, F10, or Del).
    • Look under Advanced, Audio, or I/O Configuration for a Microphone option and ensure it’s Enabled.
    1. Run Windows troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.

Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter and follow its recommendations.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance, just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
