I have an issue when I try to do an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2019 to Windows Server 2022. Installation itself starts, run okay but after restarting, system reverts to older version of Windows and I got the following errors:

0x800F081E-0x2003
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_UPDATES operation

@Casty McBoozer  after downloading http://178.239.169.134/SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2022_2108.18_64Bit_English_DC_STD_MLF_X23-37922.iso was able to upgrade to server 2022, didn't have to disable network card, selected not to install updates, no idea if it helped

    Hello Everyone,

To answer for the question, I found out that the it was due to driver issue as per the error code.

So if you running a VMware VM, check all the legacy drivers that is being used on the VM, which could be the reason for the failure.

Like the Network Adapter drivers and Storage Controller drivers

For the Network Adapter try using the VMXNET3 and For Storage try using the LSI Logic SAS or further to it.

Let me know if any questions.

    Thank you!

tried an inplace upgrade from w2k16 -> wk22 on HyperV -> no problem
tried the same on Vmware with 12.3.5 tools -> upgrade failed
2nd try with the Vmware network card removed + SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2022_2108.iso -> successful
