The following specifications pertain to a Dell laptop experiencing registration issues with a Microsoft Account:

Laptop Specification:

  • Device Name: JMB002
  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz
  • Installed RAM: 4.00 GB
  • Storage: 466 GB HDD ST950042 0AS
  • Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (1017 MB)
  • Device ID: D417A32A-4CD4-4583-8AF2-0960638353DF
  • Product ID: 00330-80000-00000-AA086
  • System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • Pen and Touch: No pen or touch input is available for this display

Windows Specifications:

  • Edition: Windows 10 Pro
  • Version: 22H2
  • Installed on: 30/08/24
  • OS Build: 19045.6332

When logging into the Microsoft Account on this laptop, it does not appear in the list of registered devices, although it is the original Microsoft Account associated with this PC.

Background:

  • The Dell laptop was originally purchased with Windows 7 and named JMB001 while connected to an older Windows XP desktop (JMB002).
  • After upgrading both the laptop and desktop to Windows 10 without renaming them, a new Lenovo laptop (Windows 11) was added to the network. The Dell laptop was subsequently renamed to JMB002, and the Lenovo was named JMB001.
  • Currently, logging into the Windows 10 laptop (JMB002) shows the Lenovo device listed, without any Microsoft Account linked to it, while the Dell laptop is not visible.

Assistance is needed to register the Dell laptop and desktop to enroll them in the ESU program for Windows 10. Any guidance on how to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

Hi Mark Brockway,

I'm Hendrix, here to help with your query on the Microsoft Q&A forums. Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your device doesn’t appear under your Microsoft Account, especially when you need it for ESU enrollment. Let’s walk through this together step by step.

When a Windows device doesn’t appear in your Microsoft Account, it’s usually because:

  • The device is signed in with a local account instead of a Microsoft Account.
  • The device was renamed or upgraded (as in your case from JMB001 to JMB002).
  • Sync settings are turned off or the account hasn’t been verified.

The steps below are my recommended method to fix the device registration:

  1. Check Your Sign-In
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    • Make sure it says “Signed in with a Microsoft account”. If not, switch from local to Microsoft Account.
    • If you see a Verify button, click it and complete the verification steps.
  2. Turn On Sync
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings and enable it.
  3. Check Device Limit

Your Dell laptop meets the requirements for ESU. Here’s what you should do after device registration is fixed:

  1. Update Windows
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install all updates.
  2. Enable Windows Backup
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and turn it on. This links your device and can give you 1 year of free ESU.
  3. Enroll via Windows Update
    • After updates, check Windows Update for the “Enroll now for Extended Security Updates” option.

I look forward to receiving your update and I'm willing to collaborate with you till we resolve the issue. Please keep me informed.

Hello and Good Day Hendrix- V.

Thank you for your quick response.

OK I followed these instructions with the following results:

    Check Your Sign-In

I logged in with the Microsoft account. At least when I go to Settings > Accounts > Your info, it shows the Full Name of the account, my email address and the account type. The screen also displays two links, "Manage my Microsoft account" and "Sign in with a local account instead".

There is no verify button or link.

    Turn On Sync

I did not have a Sync your settings so I used the search function which brought me to Accounts > Windows Backup. All options on this page were enabled.

    Check Device Limit

I logged into Microsoft account and checked the devices tab. There is only one device listed, my Windows 11 Lenovo laptop.

    Update Windows

I ran the windows update and it reported You’re up to date. Settings > System > About reports the OS as Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 OS Build 19045.6332.

    Enable Windows Backup

I went to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and again all options are enabled.

But I still do not have the “Enroll now for Extended Security Updates” option.

I am at a loss as to why Microsoft is not seeing this PC.

    Very Respectfully
    Mark B.
