I'm getting a Misplaced Sections banner at the top of my OneNote (iOS). Says read only. Don't see help on this anywhere similar to Recover Deleted (pages, sections, etc).

 Hello Frank Tyminski,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your post. I understand that you are having issue with "Misplaced Sections" in OneNote. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you further.

Misplaced Sections occur when OneNote can't sync a section because it can't find the section file. This often happens due to:

  • Sync conflicts
  • Network issues
  • File corruption
  • Permissions or password protection

Therefore, Here's how you can recover or fix Misplaced Sections in OneNote on your Mac and iPhone, especially when you're seeing a read-only banner:

1. Move the Section to Another Notebook

If the section contains important info and you want to keep it:

  • On your Mac or iPhone, go to the Misplaced Sections area (usually at the bottom of the notebook list).
  • Right-click or long-press the section tab.
  • Choose Move or Copy.
  • Select a valid notebook or section to move it to

Disclaimer: On iOS, the move option may be grayed out if the section is password-protected or if sync is broken

2. Restore from OneDrive

If the section was synced to OneDrive before becoming misplaced:

  • Go to OneDrive online on your Mac.
  • Use the Restore your OneDrive feature to revert to a previous version of the notebook
  • Open OneNote again and check if the section reappears in the correct location.

3. Delete the Misplaced Section (if not needed)

If you're sure the section is no longer needed:

  • Go to Misplaced Sections.
  • Right-click the section name.
  • Choose Delete.

Disclaimer: This is permanent. If unsure, move it instead

4. Troubleshooting Tips

  • Force Sync: On Mac, press Shift + F9 to manually sync OneNote.
  • Reset OneNote on iOS:

Quit OneNote.

Go to Settings > OneNote > Reset.

Enable all reset options.

Restart your device and sign back in

  • Check Other Devices: Sometimes misplaced sections only appear on one device. Check your Mac or OneDrive to see if the section is accessible elsewhere

For more details, please have a look at this page: Resolve misplaced sections in OneNote

I hope this helps in your situation. Feel free to let me know if you have another update.

Sincerely,

9/2/25 11:02 I had to do a manual SYNC ALL NOTEBOOKS, then I saw the page. I added a subsequent page to the same section on the Mac and had to manually SYNC to get it on the iPhone. Looks like an auto-sync issue between the two devices. I'll have to check two other devices (wife' iPhone and WIN 10 PC) that we share OneNote.

9/2/25 21:11 Another OneNote failure. I accidentally deleted a SECTION because DELET is too close to VIEW AS LIST and we hit a pothole and Poof, gone. I tried to go into VIEW DELETED and it was not there. Additionally, another page went to MISPLACED. Forced Sync, Sync All did nothing to fix it this time. I'very concerned as I have years of a categorized OneNotes, containing links to files.

I need direct telephone, screen sharing on this.
