PPT automatically selects Transitions > Advance Slide > After

I am trying to record audio for a PPT slide presentation. When I go to Transitions > Advance Slide, I deselect "After," so that only "On Mouse Click" is selected. When I go back to continue recording, PPT automatically reselects "After," so the slide will not advance during recording.

How do I prevent PPT from automatically selecting "After" during audio recording?

I am using Microsoft 365 version 2506, and build 19825.20216.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Dear @Tim-Mun,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum and for following up with the solution you discovered. That's excellent troubleshooting and sharing your findings is incredibly helpful for the entire community!

It's a common point of confusion, and your detailed explanation will surely help others who face the same challenge.

Here are a summary of the issue and the solution for anyone who discovers this thread.

Issue Description

You observed that after setting a slide's transition to advance "On Mouse Click" only, PowerPoint would automatically re-enable the "After" timing setting. This happened specifically after using the record function to retake the audio for a single slide, which then prevented the presentation from advancing manually as expected.

Assessment

Your diagnosis is perfectly correct. The behavior is linked to the specific function of Record > Retake > On Current Slide.

This option is designed to be a self-contained action to replace the narration and timing for only that one slide. When you complete the retake, PowerPoint saves the new audio and its duration, automatically applying that new timing to the slide. This is why the "After" box gets re-checked with the new time.

Your solution is the correct workflow:

  1. Use Retake > On Current Slide to re-record the audio for just that slide.
  2. Stop the recording completely.
  3. Manually advance to the next slide where you want to continue.
  4. Begin a new recording from that point.

For anyone looking for more details on the recording features in PowerPoint, Microsoft's official guide is an excellent resource. It covers the different options for recording, clearing, and managing timings and narrations.

I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue! It's very easy to misunderstand the nuances of the different recording options.

I think I solved the problem.

I was selecting Retake Video > On current slide, thinking that PPT would continue recording from that point on. It doesn't. Your options are to either [1] retake the recording for that one slide, or [2] re-record the whole presentation.

So, I retake the recording for that one slide, and stop the recording. Then, I manually advance the deck to the next slide, and THEN I can record from that point forward.

I hate to admit it, but it was my own misunderstanding of the recording options for doing a retake.

Sorry, here is more information for the original post.

With Transitions > Advance Slide > After deselected, and On Mouse Click selected, I record the next slide in the presentation.

When I am done recording the audio for that slide and click the mouse, PPT does not advance to the next slide on the mouse click (even if I click the mouse several times).

I click the red "record" button to stop the recording, and THEN PPT automatically selects Transitions > Advance Slide > After.

    I hope that helps.
