I lost all my (synced) Edge passwords this night, both on Windows (v139) & Android (v138)

Yesterday, I had all my passwords in Edge (138) on Windows 10 and in Android.

Today, Edge was updated to 139 and I lost all my passwords, both on Windows & Android.

How to recover them? I have no local backup or snapshot apparently (MS support spent an hour browsing my machine).

Thanks

    Hi mst****,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Microsoft Q&A. I can understand the inconvenience this issue has caused you. To help resolve this issue, please follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1: Verify and Reset Sync

Resets local sync data, bypassing v139 bugs or server conflicts, and forces a fresh pull from the cloud.

    1 - On Windows (Edge v139):

    • Open Edge > Settings > Profiles > Sync.
    • Ensure Sync is enabled and Passwords is checked.
    • Click Reset sync (this clears local sync data but attempts to re-download from the cloud).
    • Sign out of your Microsoft account (Settings > Profiles > Your profile > Sign out) and sign back in.
    • Wait 5-10 minutes, then check Settings > Profiles > Passwords to see if passwords reappear.
    • Open edge://sync-internals in the address bar > Type Info > check the Passwords row for a non-zero count (indicates cloud data exists).

    2 - On Android (Edge v138):

    • Tap the three dots > Settings > Your profile > Sync.
    • Toggle Passwords off and back on, or sign out and sign back in if the option exists.
    • Wait and check the password list.

Step 2: Repair Edge and Check Sync Status

Repairs update corruption or bugs in v139 that might prevent sync, without losing cloud data.

    1 - On Windows:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Microsoft Edge > three dots (...) > Modify > Repair (attempts to fix without data loss).
    • If no improvement, select Reset (clears settings but may trigger resync).
    • Restart Edge and recheck passwords.

    2 - On Android:

    • Go to phone Settings > Apps > Edge > Storage.
    • Clear cache (avoid Clear data to preserve local data).
    • Force stop the app and restart it.

    Step 3: Troubleshoot Microsoft Account

A glitch or conflict (e.g., expired token, multiple sign-ins) can desync passwords; a password reset forces a clean sync. Server conflicts might resolve with updated credentials.

    • Sign out of Edge on all devices.
    • Visit account.microsoft.com > change your Microsoft account password (use a new, strong password) > update it on all devices.
    • Sign back into Edge on both devices with the new credentials.
    • Check edge://signin-internals on Windows for errors indicating account issues.
    • If issues persist, go to account.microsoft.com > My Sign-Ins> Review activity to ensure no unauthorized access.

Step 4: Monitor and Escalate to Microsoft Support

Escalation can uncover server outages, account glitches, or v139 bugs not resolved locally. Support might restore data if it’s on their servers.

    • Open Edge > go to edge://settings/help > Send feedback with details (v139 update, password loss on both platforms).
    • Reply to your existing Microsoft support ticket or start a new one, mentioning the update and cross-device issue.
    • Monitor Microsoft 365 Status (via status.microsoft.com) for sync server outages or issues.
    • Check community forums for v139-specific fixes.
