Windows 11 digital license activation issue

Hello,

I purchased a Windows 11 Home license through the Microsoft Store, and it activated without any issues on my previous laptop. After that laptop broke, I bought a new one, but now I can't activate Windows on it.

What I’ve already tried:

  1. All troubleshooting steps from the "Activation Troubleshooter" section.
  2. Manual commands via slmgr.vbs (/upk, /cpky, /ato).
  3. Verified that the Windows edition matches the license.

Thanks

Thank you for letting me know.

Before reaching out to Microsoft Support, there's one more thing you can try that sometimes helps sync the license info:

  • Open the Microsoft Store on your new device.
  • Sign in using the same Microsoft account you used to purchase the license.
  • Restart your device.
  • After the restart, go back to the Microsoft Store and confirm you're still signed in with the same account.
  • Then go to Settings > System > Activation, and run the Activation Troubleshooter again, selecting "I changed hardware on this device recently."

If it still doesn’t activate, then the best step would be to contact Microsoft Support directly so they can check your license details and assist with reassigning or reactivating it. Here’s the link to get in touch:

  • Here is the link: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact
  • Type this keyword and press Enter: Contact Support.
  • At the bottom, click "Sign in to contact support" and sign in with your Personal Microsoft account (Not work or school account), or click "Contact Support" if you're already signed in.
  • In Product and services, select "Windows".
  • In Category, select "Technical support."
  • Click "Chat with a support agent in your web browser".

I really hope this information is helpful! :)

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Windows digital licenses purchased from the Microsoft Store are typically linked to the device they were first activated on, unless they were explicitly purchased as transferable (retail) licenses.

A couple of things to check and try:

    1. Microsoft account link: Was the license linked to your Microsoft account before the old laptop stopped working? You can check by going to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and see if your previous laptop with the activated Windows 11 shows up.
    2. Reactivation steps:
    • On your new laptop, sign in using the same Microsoft account.
    • Go to Settings > System > Activation, then select Troubleshoot.
    • Select I changed hardware on this device recently, then follow the prompts to link the new device.

If that doesn’t work, or if the activation still fails, it might be that the license isn’t transferable. In that case, I’d recommend contacting Microsoft Support directly. I will help you with the steps to contact Microsoft Support, just let me know.
