Why is it that the search bar in outlook doesn't work when clicked the first time? Whenever you click the first time it boots you out of it and forces you to move your mouse back to click on it again. is there any fix for this?

     Hi Kirsty Levin

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on the information you described, your Outlook search bar doesn't respond on the first click. Here are some recommend solutions you can try:

(Note: please make sure you have the latest version)

1/ Try to use Keyboard Shortcut Instead of Mouse

Press Ctrl + E or Alt + Q to jump directly to the search bar. This bypasses the mouse click issue entirely.

    2/ Rebuild the Search Index

Go to File > Options > Select Search from the left-hand menu > Click Indexing Options

In the new window, click Advanced.

Under the Index Settings tab > click Rebuild.

(Note: Rebuilding the Outlook search index may take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours, depending on factors such as mailbox size, system performance, and the number of accounts configured. During this process, search results may be incomplete until indexing is fully completed)

    3/ Resize the Outlook Window

If Outlook is currently maximized, consider restoring it to a smaller window. Several users have reported that the issue with the search bar becomes less frequent or disappears entirely when Outlook is not in full-screen mode.

4/ Switch to Classic Outlook (if using New Outlook) or try to use Outlook Desktop App

If you're currently using the "New Outlook", consider switching back to the classic version. The toggle to switch between versions is typically located in the top-right corner of the Outlook window.

Additionally, if you have access to the Outlook Desktop App, please check whether the same issue occurs in the Outlook Web App. This comparison can help determine whether the problem is specific to the classic desktop interface or affects other platforms as well.

I am looking forward to your response.
