When you view the Slide Master, you should see a pushpin icon to the left of the slide master. This indicates that the master will be preserved when you save the file. If that icon is not visible, please right-click on the slide master and choose Preserve Master.

Rarely, I see presentation where even preserved masters disappear. You should be able to prevent this by adding at least one slide from each slide master to the presentation. PowerPoint will not delete masters that are actively being used by slides.

    Eli,

Please see (and follow) John Korchok's advice before reading Fordy's reply.

The latter might be correct in some cases, the former is gold.

    Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community Forum. Please accept our warmest regards and sincerest hope that all is well despite the situation you find yourself in.

Yes, this issue has been reported by other users—it seems that PowerPoint Master Templates sometimes disappear unexpectedly when saving.

    Possible Causes & Fixes:

    1. Check File Format – If you're saving in .pptx, try saving as a PowerPoint Template (.potx) instead.
    2. Disable AutoSave – Some users have found that AutoSave can cause unexpected template changes. Try turning it off.
    3. Use "Save As" Instead of Overwriting – Instead of saving over an existing file, use File > Save As to create a new version.
    4. Repair Office Installation – Go to Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft Office > Modify, then select Repair.
    5. Check for Updates – Ensure PowerPoint is fully updated, as Microsoft may have released a fix.
    6. Test on Another Device – If possible, try opening the file on another computer to see if the issue persists.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Fordy B.
