To whom it may concern. Our customer is using Windows 11 with Microsoft 365 Office Current Channel v2411 build 18227.201162.

When we try to send a Microsoft Word document by selecting > Share > Email send as Attachment

I get the message - "Either there is no default mail. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client".

Outlook is already set as a default client in the default Apps option and the default applications by the protocol are already set as MAILTO Protocol in the default Apps option to Outlook (new). Please assist.

The “New Outlook is just a re-badged version of Windows Mail and like its predecessor, it is not MAPI compliant and cannot be used to send messages from any of the other Office applications (Access, Excel, Word).

The Outlook Product Team have advised that there are no plans to add MAPI compliance to the "New Outlook", which I suspect is because it is not possible to do so.

    Dear Paul Laubscher1,

Thank you for reachoing out. About the "MAILTO Protocol in default Apps not working for Outlook" problem, here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:

    Verify Default Mail Client Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
    • Under the Email section, ensure Outlook is selected as the default mail client.

    Check MAILTO Protocol:

    • In the Default apps settings, scroll down to Choose default apps by protocol.
    • Ensure that the MAILTO protocol is set to Outlook.

    Repair Office Installation:

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Microsoft Office in the list, click on it, and select Modify.
    • Choose Online Repair and follow the prompts.

    Registry Edit (Advanced):

    • Open the Registry Editor (press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter).
    • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail.
    • Ensure that the default value is set to Microsoft Outlook.
    • Note: Editing the registry can have serious consequences if not done correctly, so proceed with caution and consider backing up your registry first: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

You have to set the classic Outlook as the default for e-mails instead of the new Outlook.

The new Outlook won't work, as you have noticed, because it isn't MAPI-compliant.

Hi Sophia. Thank you for responding. I did check the following:

    1. Verify Default Mail Client Settings: - Which is Outlook.

    2. Check MAILTO Protocol: - It Is set to Outlook.

    3. Repair Office Installation: - I did do a repair without any problems.

    4. Registry Edit - The default value is set to GroupWise

There is no default value in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail for Outlook it is set to GroupWise.

The user should use GroupWise but she wants the option when compiling a Microsoft Word document by selecting > Share > Email send as Attachment to send it to her personal Outlook account.

Thanks, Stefan for responding. I did set the classic Outlook as the default for e-mails instead of the new Outlook but it still sends the MS Word document as an Attachment to GroupWise which is not set as the user's default email Client.
