Cannot paste from Word into Powerpoint

Each time I try to paste text from Word into Powerpoint, this message box occurs in Powerpoint:

"We're sorry, something went wrong that might make Powerpoint unstable. Please save your presentations and restart Powerpoint."

Restarting makes no difference. Uninstalled and then reinstalled Microsoft 365, and that made no difference.

I'm running the latest versions of PPT and Word on Windows 10.

Any suggestions?

I have encountered the same issue.

Pasting from Word into PowerPoint worked when Word was in Safe Mode, however, removing custom formatting and disabling add-ins within Word, in and of itself, had no effect on the issue.

The issue did not occur if the user pasted using "Ctrl + Shift + V" or "Text Only", or from any source other than Word.

Upon running sfc scan, dism, Windows and Dell updates, as well as Office online and quick repair, and rebooting the device, the issue continued to occur.

The issue did not persist across devices, or other user profiles on a single device.

In this instance the registry change laid out above, worked :

  • Exit all Office programmes, hold down the Windows key + R at the same time, type regedit and press Enter.
  • Open the following folders in turn, find the Office folder, and rename it (for example, rename Office to Officeold):
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Officeold
  • Re-open the PPT

Many thanks to Petter, for providing the fix.

Kindest regards,

Nikodem

Hi Hubie Tracy.

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

I realize that you've encountered a problem of PPT paste.

There are some methods here that can solve your problem:

  1. Check the version information of Powerpoint

May be due to the version of Powerpoint and word does not match, resulting in some features can not be used, open Powerpoint, click ‘File’ >> ‘Account’, view Product Information the following information.

With the same method to view the word information.

If different, please reinstall office, enter the Microsoft website to download: Microsoft 365 - Subscription for Productivity Apps | Microsoft 365

If you can't recognize it, can you easily send the following screenshot?

  1. Clear the COM add-in:
  • Open PowerPoint, click File‘>Options’>Add-ins.

Image

Image

  • At the bottom of the dialogue box, change the ‘Manage’ drop-down option to ‘COM Add-ins’ and click ‘Go’.

Image

  • Clear the checkboxes of all enabled ‘COM Add-ins’ and click ‘OK’.
  • Re-open PPT
  • Word and perform the same operation, click on File > Options > Add-ins > Manage ‘Change the drop-down option to ‘COM Add-ins’ >> ‘Go’, clear the checkboxes of all enabled ‘COM Add-ins’. Clear the checkboxes for all enabled ‘COM Add-ins’ and click ‘OK’. Reopen word
  1. Rename the registry:
  • Exit all Office programmes, hold down the Windows key + R at the same time, type regedit and press Enter.
  • Open the following folders in turn, find the Office folder, and rename it (for example, rename Office to Officeold):
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Officeold
  • Re-open the PPT

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

  1. Safe boot to troubleshoot errors

Sometimes some system programs can affect the PPT paste function, here is a link to show you how to troubleshoot and close the wrong program:How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

I hope this helps, let me know if this is contrary to what you need.

Best Regards, Thank You.
