Can´t switch to Beta Channel - Excel

Hi there!

Years ago, I installed and used to work in Microsoft Office with an enterprise license (former University). However, a few months ago I subscribed to Microsoft 365 (Family) with the intention to try the Beta Channel. However, I am unable to switch or change to the Beta Channel.

I have already joined the Insider Program and tried several things, among them:

  1. Signing out from the previous account and changing license to the current Family license.
  2. Uninstalling Office and reinstalling it with the new license.
  3. Trying to add the Beta Channel key directly from the Registry Editor.

It is really puzzling and frustrating as in another machine (kinda new and without a previous license logged in) it was very straightforward to enable the Beta Channel.

A screenshot is attached, where it shows that I am subscribed for Beta Channel updates but the Version remains in "Current Channel" despite of changing channel.

Perhaps there is something left from the previous enterprise license that is blocking the change? Or what should I do?

    Hi! Santiago Nuñez3,

    Thank you for your response!

    Since you're not getting any results with manual updates at the moment either, I'd like to ask you to try updating manually using the command line and see if that works. Below are the detailed steps:

    1, close all Office software, in the “Start Menu” in the search “Command Prompt” (or “cmd”), and the right mouse button click and select “Administrator identity run”;

    2, in the command prompt type the following code:

    cd %programfiles% \Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun

    Press Enter on your keyboard;

    3, and then type the following code :

    Officec2rclient. exe /update user updater. exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17716.20002

    Thank you for your understanding and patience.

    Best Regards

    Hi Eddy, thanks again.

    I tried the suggested steps but unfortunately with no luck. I did a manual and the tool-guided uninstall but once I reinstall Office, it still stays in the Current Channel regardless of the change in channel or update.

    Hi! Santiago Nuñez3,

    Thank you very much for your reply and the information you have provided!

    I noticed you mentioned that you first installed Office under the Enterprise account status, and since Office applications store your activation information locally, it does have the potential to have an impact on this.

    For now I suggest you try resetting Office through the registry first, here are the detailed steps:

    Press Windows + R , type in: regedit in the run box that opens and press enter.

    Rename the Office folder by locating the following key (right-click on it and select Rename, e.g. rename Office to Officeold)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

    Then reopen the word document to see if it worked.

    Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

    If the above reset method doesn't work, you need to uninstall the Office application and reinstall it:

    1. Uninstall the Office applications in your computer, I noticed that you have installed a version of Click -to-Run, please refer to the official instructions link: Uninstall Office from a PC - Microsoft Support, Uninstall Office by following the Click -to-Run version of the uninstallation in the page.

    1. After completing the uninstallation, please click the link: Microsoft account | Services & subscriptions, Log in to your Microsoft account that is subscribed to Microsoft 365, click on Services & Subscriptions on the left hand side of the page, find your Microsoft 365 subscription on the right hand side, where there will be an install button, please click on it to install the Office apps that match your subscription. See if your problem is resolved after reinstalling Office applications.

    Thank you for your efforts on this issue!

    Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.  Thank you for your understanding and patience and I look forward to hearing from you. Best Regards Eddy | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    HI Eddy, thanks for your help and assistance.

    To confirm the initial information.

    1. No, the account domain is not longer showing any details about the corporate user/domain. I only use a corporate domain (from a University) to log in on Microsoft Teams.
    2. I have had this problem from the first time I tried to enable Beta. I have never been able to change the channel from Current to Beta.

    In the screenshot you can see that I already used a domain with the outlook suffix. I am able to perform manual updates, however it says "everything is up to date".

    I tried the suggestions mentioned above (domain change, and modifying network) without success. I have to mention that the first time I installed Office was under the Corporate account. Might that be influencing in some way?

    Thanks in advance and hope we can find a way to switch to the Beta Channel

    Santiago

    Hi! Santiago Nuñez3,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community! I realize that you've encountered a problem with Joined Microsoft  365 Insider, but Office apps aren't updated to the latest version and I understand how you feel.

    At the very beginning I would like to make it clear to you that since Beta updates are pushed automatically from the server, community members are not able to manipulate or modify them. Therefore, I will do my best to answer your questions on the strategic and technical aspects of the software. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.

    In order to be able to investigate the issue further, I sincerely invite you to confirm the following information with me:

    1. I noticed in your description that your account appears to have been previously used as a corporate account, is your current account domain name still a proprietary corporate domain name?
    2. Did you have this problem the first time you tried to enable Beta, or was it fine before and you just had this problem recently?

    For now I suggest you try the following to see if it solves the problem:

    1.Please add an alias to your account with the suffix @Outlook.com.

    Please log in to the Microsoft account | Your profile > select [Your Info] > select [Account Info] > select [Sign in Preference] and then add an alias account > after successfully adding it, next to the alias that was created, click on [Set as Primary] > and then click on [Sign in Preference] at the bottom and click on [Change Sign in Preference] > choose the new alias and save > Try to log in to Office applications using the new alias.

    1. You can also try to modify your network:

    a. Change the DNS  ;

    • Press Win logo key + R and type ncpa.cpl  ;.
    • Click on the name of the network you are now connected to, open the Network Status window, click Properties, and in the Network Properties window double-click  Internet < protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4).   .
    • Set the DNS server manually to "4.2.2.1" and "4.2.2.2", restart the computer to see if the problem can be solved.   ;

    b. Clear the Host file (please back it up so that it can be restored in time in the event of an accident) . Locate: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc to find hosts file cut to the desktop (that is, clear the operation of the host), and then see how the effect.   ; c. Reset Network Settings . Press Win logo key + R, type inetcpl.cpl, open  Internet  options, click Advanced, and check "Use  SSL 3.0", "Use  TLS 1.0", "Using  TLS 1.1", "Using  TLS TLS 1.2", reboot your computer after applying it to see if you can solve the problem.

    1. Please click on Microsoft 365 and Office Updates in the location of the screenshot of the page you provided to see if you can do a manual update. (Sometimes there is a lag in the automatic update, and it may not be able to update for you at the first time.) Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.Thank you for your understanding and patience. Best Regards Eddy | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
