Horizontal ruler not aligned with text in Word mirror pages

It's been a frustrating week as I couldn't align the page margins properly to format a book with mirrored pages. The margins setup selections are correct, and a next section break was inserted after each page and also to create blank pages. However, as each page was gauged against the horizontal ruler, the gutter margins were occasionally not properly sequenced. I finally resorted to applying gridlines to see if the gutter margins complemented each other and found the ruler was misleading me. The ruler matched only the even pages, while for the odd pages the ruler margins were reversed. /

Another problem arose when trying to number the pages. Selecting the "iii" option for pagination of the front matter required repeated steps to individually set the first three pages before some entires gradually propagate to subsequent pages while others didn't. At page seven the format changed to numbers and the only way I could correct that problems was to go back to the page number options and change the format with each page individually. What's going on?

For the second part of your question, see http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/FrontMatterRibbon.htm

For the first part, note that this is a known bug (which is being investigated); you just have to ignore the ruler and accept that the display of the document is correct.
