Page view counter at the bottom of the page not matching the number shown on usage report.

Hello, I am a little confused because it seems that the page view counter is changing daily, not really clear on the logic behind the numbers, and the number in the usage report doesn't match the number at the bottom of the page.

So my questions are:

  1. What is the logic behind the view counter number on the bottom of the pages? Is it the last 7 days' activity by default or something?
  2. Why are numbers different between the view counter on the page and the usage report?

Even if the view counter on the pages is generated based on the last 7 days' activity, something is very wrong here. 234 views vs 46 views vs 36 views... Which one is the true view counts?

Here are some screenshots.

Here is the screenshot from today

Here is the screenshot of the usage report.

Any thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

    Hi 222lovebirds,

Thanks for sharing updates with us. I'm sorry there is no option or way to  reset the numbers of Site page view . However if you don't mind you can create a new page in SharePoint online for test purpose and check the outcomes.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

Thank you for your reply. I checked other pages, and the numbers are all over the place. I still am not sure why then our numbers don't match like your test. Which number is accurate in our case? Is there a way to reset the numbers so that we can start it from 0?

    Thank you,

    Hi 222lovebirds,

I go through your post carefully and as per your description, based on my test result and search the algorithm used to calculate Site page view is designed to filter out repetitive, continual operations by the same user on the same item (page, document, or news). For example, when a user repeatedly refreshes a page, document, or news post.

Views is based on Search service and counter will get Increment once Search Service crawled again and refresh the content.

The report calculates the time when users are actually active on the page or news post, not counting the time when the page is minimized or when the user has the page open but is inactive.

For more detail here is article for reference: View usage data for your SharePoint site

Based on my test I can see same number even I click on usage report.

Also, retrieve the Views Lifetime, referring to this article:  Office 365/SharePoint Online - PowerShell Script to Get and Export Site Pages ViewsLifeTimeUniqueUsers & ViewsLifeTime Details
