My office uses a microsoft access 2003 database to log all of our workshop jobs.

Our old server was server 2003, office 2003 and terminal services. We upgraded the server box and moved to Server 2008 and Office 2007 and terminal services.

Our access database now drives us crazy with long delays while refreshing lists etc....WHY???

I have tested the database on a both 32bit and 64bit vista and windows 7 with access 2007 and it works perfectly.

I have come to the conclution that it is server 2008 (the operating system its self)...but what? Several things across the net talk about issues with the jet 4.0 engine but noone seems to know how to fix the issue.

Please help...

This fix has been known to work on some things:

  1. Open Regedit
  2. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Access Connectivity Engine\Engines\ACE]
  3. Click on MaxBufferSize - Decimal
  4. Change the value to 16384, click OK

However, there always seem to be some 64bit installs that just don't run older Access applications well.

Have you considered upsizing to SQL Server Express (or other version), which seems to alleviate this issue?

You should note that on a Windows 2008 server the Microsoft Access  service runs in the foreground. By default Windows 2008 servers Processor scheduling is set for background services. Therefore any background  services have priority over foreground services.

    To change:-

Control Panel> System> Advanced system Setting

    Advanced Tab

    Performance [Settings]

    Advanced

    Processor scheduling

    Adjust for best performance of:

    Programs (*)            Background service ( )

Obviously this switch should be used with caution as it will affect all services on the server.

The problem I experienced was similar to yours but it had to do more with the server than it did with MS Access.
