I am attempting to underline certain words in Notepad, but can not find how to do it. Any suggestions? Thanks.
You might try using Wordpad instead. It is also free, included with Windows 7, and does support underlining words.

NotePad is a text editor. You can't format text in that application (beyond changing the display font for all the text, that is).
Notepad is a plain text program. Any formatted text pasted will be automatically deleted. Here's some of the ways I get around that when I have to write plain text emails:
italic words - /italic/
bold words - BOLD
italic bold words - /ITALIC BOLD/
underlined words - _underline_
highlighted words - *highlighted words*
However, if you go to manytools.org, it has a nice online program to edit your plain text for strikethrough, underline and a few more. And you are able to paste your results into notepad as well as other plain text documents. (at least the ones that I have tried)
