Hello
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
Based on your description of the battery limiting switch reverting to "Off" in the UEFI interface on your Surface Pro 8, here’s a structured troubleshooting approach combining firmware, software, and hardware solutions:
- Force UEFI Reset & Retry Toggle
- Hard reset the device: Hold the power button + Volume Up for 30 seconds until the screen flashes and the device restarts. This clears temporary firmware glitches.
- Re-enter UEFI: Immediately after reset, press and hold Volume Up while tapping the power button. Release when the UEFI screen appears.
- Retry the toggle: Navigate to Boot Configuration > Battery Limit and toggle it again. If it still reverts, proceed below.
- Update UEFI/Surface Firmware
Outdated firmware often causes UEFI settings instability:
- Windows Update method:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates.
- Install all Surface UEFI and System Firmware updates.
- Manual firmware recovery:
- Download the latest Surface Pro 8 driver package.
- Run the installer as administrator, reboot, then retry UEFI toggle.
- Power Flush & Battery Calibration
Electrical residue can interfere with settings:
- Shut down the Surface and unplug all peripherals.
- Hold Power + Volume Down for 40 seconds.
- Release, wait 5 minutes, then power on normally.
- System Reset as Last Resort
If firmware updates fail, reset Windows while preserving UEFI:
- Soft reset (keeps files):
- Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC > Keep my files.
- USB recovery drive method:
- Create a recovery USB via another PC using the Surface Recovery Image.
- Boot from USB (Volume Down + Power), then choose Troubleshoot > Reset.
- Hardware Checks & Service
- Battery health check:
- Run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt. If "Design Capacity" is significantly below "Full Charge Capacity", the battery may need replacement.
- Contact Microsoft Support:
- If all steps fail, the UEFI chip or battery controller may be faulty. Surface Pro 8 has a 2-year limited warranty—request firmware-level diagnostics.
- Surface UEFI is proprietary; generic BIOS utilities may cause instability.
- Ensure the Surface is plugged in during UEFI changes to prevent voltage drops.
- Before system resets, backup data via OneDrive or external storage.
If you have any updates, feel free to let me know.
