Hi,

I would like to clarify the current capabilities regarding the integration between SharePoint Online and Microsoft Purview. As far as I understand, SharePoint Online files currently have limited direct integration with Purview. Some functionalities are available through M365 Information Protection and Defender for Cloud Apps, but I would like to specifically ask:

Is it currently possible to directly connect SharePoint Online to Microsoft Purview for automated metadata scanning, including version history and extracting data lineage for the files stored in SharePoint?

If this is not currently supported, is there a roadmap or any planned development for this capability?

I would appreciate your guidance and any additional documentation you could share.

Based on the information you have provided, looks like you want to directly connect SharePoint Online to Microsoft Purview to do tasks.

Unfortunately, this option is currently not supported.

I did some research and there aren't any plans or roadmaps for this capability.

I would like to automatically track the version history and metadata of files stored in SharePoint Online (such as who created the file, who modified it, and when), and generate a data lineage diagram based on this information. Is there a Microsoft cloud-native service or solution—with or without relying on third-party tools—that enables this functionality? If so, which services or integrations should I use?

After doing some research, I found that you can import file version history to Power BI.

How to get version history from SharePoint - Microsoft Fabric Community

Perhaps from Power BI you can generate a data lineage diagram.

If you want it to be automatic, you can consider using Power Automate.

In conclusion, this is all my theory, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, what I’m looking for is more of a visualization tool that can display data lineage in a diagrammatic way. Unfortunately, Power BI doesn’t have a built-in visual for this, and I haven’t found any suitable custom visuals either.

The lineage feature in Power BI is indeed great, but it mainly focuses on showing the data flow before and after report creation—kind of a process tracking view rather than a visual diagram I can embed or customize.

So most likely, I’ll need to develop a custom visual myself to achieve this kind of detailed, interactive data lineage visualization.
