Revolut debit card is declined

Hi,

I want to sign up for an Azure subscription with my Revolut VISA debit card but I am getting rejected. The error message states

Sorry, we can't accept pre-paid cards. Please try another payment method.

But the card is not pre-paid. It is a regular physical (not virtual!) debit card. What's the catch?

I am having the same issue while trying to create a PayG subscription using a Revolut Business card, which is not a prepaid card, but a debit card.

Any idea @Microsoft?

I think this is similar to "IBAN Discrimination" https://blog.revolut.com/fighting-against-iban-discrimination/

I don't think 'Try another card' is an acceptable answer, what if individuals do not have an alternative. As the other posters have mentioned this is not a pre-paid card and no different to any other card linked to a valid bank account.

The problem still hasn't been solved. :/ This is actually illegal in the EU on the part of Microsoft. Article 9 of the SEPA Regulation states that companies have to accept all registered banks in the SEPA area.

Just adding to this that I have enabled Online Payments for the card I am attempting to use and still get this "pre-paid card" declination error message.

This is a farcical problem.

Even as an MVP?

This cost me a day of support with MS, time and effort on both sides.

When trying to add an Azure subscription to my account is just declined saying I am not eligible for an Azure account - no mention of the card.

Then to cap it all off the Azure Portal went down. 2023-06-09 15:00 BST

I used a personal card from a different bank and it worked, its only when I tried to add the Revolut card to my account later that it gave the error (as above).

This is a Mastercard credit card, I've had no problems elsewhere, we should at least get an explanation as to why.

I expect its a bug.

The issue still hasn't been solved. I tried 6 months ago and I'm trying now and it's the same issue. I don't have an alternative credit card as Revolut is the main bank I use and I'm not using a pre-paid card

This is still an issue in November 2023. Live chat agent was not able to help, and didn't seem aware of the issues with Revolut cards.
This thread suggests that Microsoft should update their BIN database:

As a potential Azure subscriber, this isn't a good look. As others have mentioned I guess I will have to try the competition instead.

I was having the same issue again in the Azure portal, under Cost Management > Payment Method settings. I re-opened my last ticket with Microsoft and they've managed to resolve it for me again. Do you guys still have the issue?

Obviously nobody from Microsoft is reading or responding to this thread. Unless you absolutely need to run a Windows VM for your website (which very few people need to do these days) , I suggest you just use Google Cloud or Amazon AWS. I'm on both with my Revolut business banking and there has never been any issue with either. Going to unsubscribe from this question now.

prepaid is idem to debit card. you cannot get red/borrow , payments will be simply declined by revolute if your balance is less than the transaction amount.

I agree about using other solutions (I already have both AWS and Google Cloud accounts). The only reason I wanted to use Azure was to learn it since a few businesses require this skill.

I'm facing the same problem with my revolute card. Seems like Azure wants us to use our bank cards and not revolute so you can see all your money fly away in case you make a mistake using their cloud platform and not able to intervene.

I have the same issue using Wise. I was able to get around this for now using a personal credit card, but that's not sustainable long term.

I did see there's an option to pay using wire transfer, but with a lot of conditions including a credit check. Has anyone tried this?

Having got it worked for me after reporting the issue to Azure support, and hearing that people are still having issues, I reported this back to them. They've suggested that people can create service requests on the Azure portal "as creating a request is without limitations for [them] to validate the issue":

At the bottom left of the Azure portal page, there's a button to create a "New support request". They got this working for me pretty quickly, 2-3 working days and it was sorted.

If they do this for enough people, hopefully they'll fix it for everyone. Anyone else try giving that a go? PS. In response to the above email, I have pointed out to them that there is already a Community Idea to support Revolut cards, and it's been open for over 6 months already.

Open a curve account (its free)
Basically you will get a Curve CreditCard and all transactions will be redirected to your Revolut Debit Card.
Azure does correctly categorize this curve card as a 'non pre paid' and lets you use it. Hope this helps.
