Latest Edge updates causing rendering problems

Flickr, Wikipedia, and many other (not all) sites now need a Refresh (Ctrl +R) after first view to make screen display look normal with recent Edge updates. Navigating to other places on sites after initial Refresh also need another Refresh. This is new behavior to me. Surface Pro 12", Windows 11 fully up to date, as well as Edge.

An example of a Windows Central article - no article text seen below Microsoft image (but title OK) until a Refresh:

Looks like Microsoft Bing Quick Search was the culprit. After disabling, pages render OK now w/o a Refresh.

Turn off Edge graphics acceleration and restart the browser; this is the most relevant first test for pages whose content appears only after repainting with Ctrl+R.

    1. Test graphics acceleration

    1. Enter edge://settings/system in Edge’s address bar.
    2. Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
    3. Select Restart, or close every Edge window and reopen Edge.
    4. Test several affected pages by navigating normally—without pressing Ctrl+R.

Microsoft identifies graphics acceleration and graphics-driver problems as causes of blank rendering and requires an Edge restart after changing this setting.^1^

    • If this fixes it: leave acceleration disabled temporarily and install any Surface graphics-driver update offered through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Afterward, re-enable acceleration and test again.
    • If it does not: restore the setting, restart Edge, and continue below.

    2. Isolate extensions and profile data

Because Edge and Windows are already current, test whether the behavior is tied to the existing Edge profile:

    1. Open an InPrivate window with Ctrl+Shift+N.
    2. Visit the same Flickr, Wikipedia, and Windows Central pages.
    3. If they render correctly, open edge://extensions/, disable every extension, and retest in a normal window.
    4. Re-enable extensions individually until the problem returns.

If InPrivate mode does not distinguish it, launch Edge with a temporary clean profile:

    1. Close all Edge windows.
    2. Open Command Prompt.
    3. Run:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" ^
      --user-data-dir="%TEMP%\edge-test-profile"

Test the affected sites in that window. If they work normally, the installed Edge profile—not the websites or general network connection—is implicated. Microsoft documents this temporary-profile test and recommends creating a fresh profile when it succeeds.^1^

    3. Clear cached page resources

If the clean profile works, but disabling extensions does not:

    1. In the regular profile, select … > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
    2. Set Time range to All time.
    3. Select Cached images and files first.
    4. Select Clear now, close Edge, and test again.

Clearing cached files is Microsoft’s documented action for page-display problems.^2^

Avoid selecting passwords or other data unless cache-only clearing fails and those items are backed up or synchronized.

    4. Repair Edge if every profile is affected

If the same failure occurs with acceleration disabled and in the temporary profile:

    1. Close Edge for every signed-in Windows user.
    2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    3. Find Microsoft Edge, select Modify, approve the prompt, and select Repair.
    4. Reopen Edge and retest.

Microsoft states that Edge repair should not affect browser data or settings.^2^

    If the problem remains

The available Microsoft information does not establish a widespread Edge-update defect matching the exact “missing content until Ctrl+R” behavior. Check the current Edge known-issues page for a newly acknowledged regression.^3^

Also submit a reproducible report through … > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Include:

    • Edge version from edge://version
    • The affected page URLs
    • The screenshot
    • Whether graphics acceleration off and the temporary profile changed the result
    • Recreate my problem diagnostic recording, if offered

Since unrelated sites exhibit the same repaint behavior, report it to Edge rather than separately to each website unless another browser shows the same failure.
