Microsoft Sentinel: Data Lake Onboarding Not Offered in Tenant — No UI or Resources Appearing

Problem description

I am trying to onboard the Microsoft Sentinel data lake for my tenant, but I am not seeing the onboarding options or UI in the Microsoft Defender portal. Instead, only SIEM workspaces and UEBA are visible, and no data lake tab or setup prompt appears. The resource provider 'Microsoft.SentinelPlatformServices' shows as NotRegistered, and no data lake resources or managed identity are present. I have verified that my Sentinel workspace is connected and I have sufficient permissions, but the onboarding experience is not available.

Environment

Microsoft Sentinel deployed on a Log Analytics workspace in East US 2. The workspace is connected to the Defender portal, and I hold Entra Global Administrator permissions and am a direct Owner on the Azure subscription. The region is supported for data lake onboarding, and the workspace is in a supported state.

What I've already tried

At case creation, I verified the portal path and confirmed the expected data lake onboarding UI was missing. I checked the Sentinel navigation experience for the workspace, and the Data lake exploration was not present. I also checked the Azure subscription resource provider 'Microsoft.SentinelPlatformServices' and found it as NotRegistered. No data lake-related resources or managed identities are present. Additionally, I reviewed public Microsoft Sentinel onboarding guidance, which describes prerequisites and troubleshooting steps for setup failures after selecting 'Set up data lake'. I confirmed that my workspace is connected and permissions are adequate, but the onboarding options still do not appear.

Current status

Currently, the data lake setup option is still not visible in the Defender portal, and the Data lake exploration entry remains absent. The resource provider 'Microsoft.SentinelPlatformServices' continues to show as NotRegistered, and no data lake resources or managed identity are created. I am seeking guidance on how to resolve this issue, possibly involving tenant-level flags or rollout conditions that might be blocking the onboarding process.

Since you've already reinstalled Gaming Services and the Xbox credential components, 80004005 on the ROG Ally X usually comes down to one of three things that survive a normal reinstall:

    1. Force-sync the Windows Time & Date: Handhelds go into deep sleep/hibernate a lot, and if the internal clock drifts even by a minute, Xbox Live authentication immediately throws 80004005. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time, make sure Set time automatically is ON, and click Sync now under Additional settings.
    2. Clear the XblAuthManager token cache in Credential Manager: Reinstalling Xbox apps doesn't actually wipe your saved Windows tokens. Open the Start menu, search for Credential Manager, and click Windows Credentials. Scroll down to Generic Credentials and delete anything starting with Xbl (like Xbl|DeviceKey, XblGrts, or XblTicket).
    3. Set Xbox Services to Automatic: Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter. Scroll to the bottom and find these four services:
      • Xbox Accessory Management Service
      • Xbox Live Auth Manager
      • Xbox Live Game Save
      • Xbox Live Networking Service
Right-click each one, go to Properties, change the Startup type from Manual to Automatic, and click Start if they aren't running.

Restart the Ally X after clearing those credentials and syncing the clock, and try signing in again. Did this start happening right after a BIOS or Armoury Crate update?

    Hi David, :)

Two things I'd check before going down the tenant-flag route:

    1. Is the workspace set as Primary, not just connected? In the Defender portal go to System > Settings > Microsoft Sentinel > SIEM workspaces. The data lake setup requires a primary Sentinel workspace, so if it's only connected, that could be why the Data lake option isn't showing.
    2. Does the workspace use customer-managed keys (CMK)? CMK isn't supported for the data lake, and workspaces with CMK aren't accessible through the data lake experiences.

I wouldn't read too much into the NotRegistered resource provider and the missing managed identity. The data lake resources are created when the setup actually runs, so with no setup started you'd expect them to be missing.

If the workspace is Primary, there's no CMK, and Data lake still doesn't appear next to SIEM workspaces and UEBA, then it's most likely something on the tenant side that only Microsoft can see. In that case I'd open a Defender support request and list everything you've already checked. That will save you a round of back and forth.

Can you let me know what the Primary setting shows?
