A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Microsoft does not publish a dedicated meaning or code-specific fix for 0x8004deca, so use the supported OneDrive sign-in repairs below in order.
1. Check the account and update OneDrive
- Sign in to the Microsoft Account dashboard using the same personal Microsoft account.
- If sign-in fails there, use the account-recovery guidance shown on that page.
- If it succeeds, the credentials and web account access are working; continue with client, Windows-profile, network, and client-specific authentication checks.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install available updates, and restart Windows.
- Install the latest OneDrive client from Download OneDrive. Microsoft recommends verifying the account and updating OneDrive before deeper troubleshooting.^1^
2. Reset and reconnect OneDrive
Resetting disconnects the local synchronization session and rebuilds its configuration; it does not delete files stored online.
- Quit OneDrive from its taskbar cloud icon.
- Press Windows+R.
- Run:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
- Wait approximately 30 seconds.
- Open Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for OneDrive.
If OneDrive settings remain accessible, select the taskbar OneDrive cloud → Help & Settings → Settings → Account → Unlink this PC, and then set up OneDrive again. Unlinking and relinking is part of Microsoft’s general sync-repair guidance.^2^
3. If stale sign-in data is suspected
This is a general cached-credential repair, not a fix documented specifically for 0x8004deca.
- Quit OneDrive.
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings
- Delete PreSignInSettingsConfig.json.
- Start OneDrive and sign in again.
Microsoft documents this procedure for expired or stale OneDrive credentials.^3^
4. Separate a network problem from a client problem
Connect the PC temporarily to a mobile hotspot and try signing in again.
- If it works through the hotspot, inspect the normal connection’s firewall, VPN, router, or internet-provider filtering.
- If it fails on both connections, continue with local-client and Windows-profile checks.
Microsoft specifically recommends the hotspot test when OneDrive cannot connect during sign-in.^4^
5. Reinstall, then test another Windows profile
If the preceding repairs fail:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft OneDrive → Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall OneDrive from Download OneDrive.
- Sign in again. Uninstalling OneDrive does not remove files stored in OneDrive online.^3^
If the error remains, perform this diagnostic test:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users → Add account.
- Select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information → Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Create a temporary local Windows user.
- Sign out, enter the temporary profile, start OneDrive, and try the same personal account.
Do not move files or delete the original profile. Successful sign-in in the temporary profile indicates that authentication or identity state in the original Windows profile is likely involved. A matching 0x8004deca case used this test to distinguish profile-local identity problems from deeper OneDrive authentication failures.^5^
If OneDrive still fails in the temporary profile and through a hotspot, contact Microsoft Support from the Need more help? section of the OneDrive sign-in page so the client-specific authentication failure can be investigated.^4^
