Creating an IoT Hub Resource not working on Student Plan

Hi I have an issue deploying an IoT hub resource. I cannot select any region from the list provided to work. The only regions I have allowed in Policy are ["austriaeast","denmarkeast","swedencentral","belgiumcentral","polandcentral"]. Can I do something about it or try to contact some sort of support to extend this regions?

    Hi,

Unfortunately you can only create IoT Hub in certain regions, and none of your five allowed regions are included. Due to limited capacity Azure for Students limits each subscription to only five regions and as a result you may be unable to deploy certain resource types.

From the error message, below is list of available regions for IoT Hub:

    Code: LocationNotAvailableForResourceType
Message: The provided location ' ' is not available for resource type 'Microsoft.Devices/IotHubs'. List of available regions for the resource type is 'westus,australiacentral2,australiasoutheast,canadaeast,centralus,eastus,germanywestcentral,koreasouth,japanwest,southindia,southafricawest,uaenorth,southeastasia,westeurope,norwaywest,westus3,norwayeast,uksouth,southcentralus,australiacentral,australiaeast,brazilsouth,canadacentral,centralindia,eastasia,francecentral,germanynorth,japaneast,koreacentral,northeurope,southafricanorth,uaecentral,ukwest,westus2,westcentralus,northcentralus,eastus2,qatarcentral,switzerlandnorth,jioindiawest'.

One potential workaround would be to create separate Pay-As-You-Go subscription and use that only for IoT Hub. If you do that please be careful that you understand pricing for each resource you create, set budget alerts, and check accrued charges at least daily. It's a good idea to delete resources immediately after you are done using them unless you are 100% sure the resource is free.

Wish I had better suggestion for you, but this is unfortunate reality right now.

Azure for Students subscriptions are restricted to specific deployment regions, and the allowed list varies by subscription. The regions shown in the Allowed locations policy are the regions that can be used for deployments.

For an IoT Hub deployment, first verify the allowed regions in Azure portal:

    1. Go to Azure Policy → Assignments.
    2. Open Allowed resource deployment regions or a similarly named assignment.
    3. Check the allowedLocations parameter value.
    4. Try creating the IoT Hub in one of those exact regions.

When creating the IoT Hub in the portal:

    1. Select + Create a resource.
    2. Go to Internet of Things → IoT Hub.
    3. On Basics, set the hub name, subscription, resource group, and choose one of the allowed regions.
    4. Continue through Networking, Management, and Review + create.

If deployment still fails even when using one of the regions already allowed by policy, the documented path is to submit a support request in Azure portal for region access remediation. Microsoft guidance says this should be done when there is a clear business need or when region access needs to be reviewed.

If the issue is specifically that the portal does not offer a usable region even though policy allows regions, most users should either:

    • select a different allowed region, or
    • submit a support request for region access review

Also note that some services can fail in a region because of service availability, capacity, quota, or policy restrictions, even if a region appears as an option.
