Window server activation

Hello,

I have purchased two licenses of Windows Server 2022 Datacenter DSP OEI 16 core , one for each physical server.

My infrastructure is as follows:

  • 2 physical servers.
  • Each server has 2 CPUs with 8 cores each (16 physical cores per server).
  • VMware ESXi is installed on both servers.
  • Each server has a fully licensed 16-core Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license.

My questions are:

  1. Am I legally allowed to install Windows Server 2022 Standard on an unlimited number of virtual machines (VMs) running on these two ESXi hosts, using my Datacenter licenses?
  2. Can I activate all Windows Server 2022 Standard VMs using the product keys included with my Datacenter OEM licenses?
  3. If direct activation using the Datacenter product keys is not supported, what is the official Microsoft-supported method to activate all these Standard VMs without purchasing an additional license for each VM?
  4. Does Microsoft support any activation method for unlimited Windows Server VMs running on VMware ESXi with Datacenter OEM licenses?

Best regards

Hi Maryk,

Based on your configuration, your Windows Server 2022 Datacenter licenses provide the right to run unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on each fully licensed physical server, including when using VMware ESXi.

Please note the following.

  1. Licensing. Your 16-core Datacenter license covers each 16-core physical server and provides unlimited Windows Server VM rights on that host.
  2. Activation. Datacenter OEM product keys are edition-specific and cannot be assumed to activate Standard VMs directly.
  3. Activation options. You may use KMS or MAK activation with the appropriate licensing and activation keys. AVMA is not supported on VMware ESXi; it requires Hyper-V.
