I purchased Microsoft Home Office 2024 in 2024 and it has worked fine until yesterday when it suddenly will no longer allow me to save files or generate new ones. What happened? What do I need to do to fix this problem? I need to do some work!

The most likely causes in this scenario are:

    1. Office is no longer activated correctly If Office shows as Unlicensed Product or has an activation problem, editing and saving can stop working.
    2. OneDrive storage or file location issues If files are stored in OneDrive and the OneDrive storage is full, documents cannot be saved until storage is available again. If OneDrive Files On-Demand is enabled, there was also a known issue where large Office files could fail to save. That issue was fixed by installing the latest Office updates.
    3. A recent Office issue or outdated build Microsoft has fixed multiple save-related issues through Office updates. Closing all Office apps and installing the latest Office updates is a supported first step.
    4. Permissions or file-location problems Saving requires read, write, modify, and delete permissions to the target folder. Save failures can also happen if the file is on an external or network drive and the connection fails.
    5. Excel add-ins or startup files For Excel save problems, a third-party add-in can block saving. Testing Excel in Safe Mode can confirm that.

    Recommended fix path:

    1. Check activation status Open a Word or Excel app and look for an Unlicensed Product or activation error message. If present, sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account associated with Office Home 2024.
    2. Install Office updates immediately In an Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. This is specifically recommended for known save issues.
    3. Restart all Office apps, then restart Windows Microsoft also recommends restarting the computer as a general recovery step for read-only and save problems.
    4. Check whether the file is in OneDrive
      • If OneDrive is full, free up storage first.
      • If the file is only online, download it to the PC and try saving locally.
      • If Files On-Demand is enabled and the problem affects large files, update Office and then try again.
    5. Try saving to a different local folder Save to a local folder such as Documents instead of a network, external, or cloud-backed location. If that works, the issue is with the original save location or permissions.
    6. If Excel is affected, test Safe Mode
      • Exit Excel.
      • Select Start, point to Programs.
      • As Excel starts, press and hold Ctrl until prompted.
      • Select Yes to start in Safe Mode.
      • Open a new workbook and try saving. If saving works in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the problem.
    7. If the file opens read-only Check whether the file is read-only, whether OneDrive is full, and whether Office activation has failed.

If Office 2024 is installed but still appears tied to an earlier Office state, Microsoft also documents a reset step for Windows:

    • Close all Office apps.
    • Go to %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Office\Licenses.
    • Delete the folder named 5.
    • Reopen an Office app and sign in again with the Office 2024 account.

Warning: deleting license data changes local Office activation state. Close all Office apps first, and use this only if updating and re-signing in did not fix the problem.
