Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Fortnite’s email-based 2FA code is sent to the email address registered on your Epic Games account; if that address ends in @xboxlivefamily.com, the message is addressed there rather than automatically going to a parent’s or newer email account.^1^
Check the destination
- Sign in to Epic Games using the Xbox sign-in option associated with your Fortnite profile.
- Open the Epic account settings and check the masked account email.
- If it is an accessible address, enable 2FA and check that mailbox, including Junk/Spam.
- If no message arrives, check whether the selected primary method is email, SMS, or an authenticator app. Epic provides separate troubleshooting for missing email codes.^2^
If Epic shows @xboxlivefamily.com
That legacy address may be attached to an older Xbox family account, but it is not safe to assume it forwards to another mailbox. Adding a Gmail or Outlook alias to the Microsoft account provides another sign-in name, but does not by itself change the email registered with Epic.
To add an accessible address without deleting the old Xbox identity:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account’s How you sign in page.
- Select Add email.
- Add an existing accessible address or create a new Outlook.com address.
- Verify the new address.
- Keep the old
@xboxlivefamily.comalias attached; removing aliases can affect how the account is accessed.^3^
Some legacy @xboxlivefamily.com accounts prevent changing the primary alias. If Make primary is unavailable or blocked by an organization-policy message, leave the legacy alias in place and use the newly added alias for Microsoft sign-in where permitted.^4^
You must then change the email inside the Epic account to the accessible address. If Epic requires a code sent to the inaccessible legacy address before allowing that change, use Epic Account Support’s email-change or account-recovery process. Do not create a replacement Epic account unless necessary, because it would be separate from the Fortnite profile currently linked to Xbox.
Microsoft two-step verification is separate from Fortnite 2FA. Enabling verification on the Microsoft account protects the Xbox/Microsoft login, but it does not enable Fortnite’s Epic-account 2FA.^5^
