Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
A personal @outlook.com address by itself does not prove the sender is legitimate. Anyone can create an Outlook.com address and send email from it.
Use these checks:
- Do not trust the address alone
Official Microsoft communication generally comes from Microsoft-owned domains such as
microsoft.com,microsoftsupport.com,mail.support.microsoft.com,office365support.com, ortechsupport.microsoft.com. A personal@outlook.comsender is not enough to prove the message is real. - Check Outlook warning signs in the message
- If Outlook shows a
?in the sender image, the sender could not be verified. - If Outlook shows a
viatag, the real sending address may be different from the From address. - If there is a yellow safety bar, the message contains blocked attachments, pictures, or links. Only interact with it if the sender is trusted.
- If there is a red safety bar, Outlook.com blocked something unsafe. Delete the message.
- If Outlook shows a
- Do not click links or open attachments If the message is suspicious, do not reply, click links, or open attachments.
- Verify account activity directly
If the email claims there was unusual activity, check the recent activity page directly at
https://account.live.com/activity. If nothing unusual appears there, the message is likely safe to ignore. - Check sign-in pages carefully
If the email asks for sign-in, the address bar should include
login.live.com. If it does not, it could be a phishing site. - Delete or block the sender if needed Outlook.com allows adding senders to the blocked senders list so future messages go to Junk Email.
If the sender is an unknown personal @outlook.com address and the messages ask for passwords, codes, phone details, payments, or urgent action, treat them as phishing or scam attempts.
