Set Windows 11 to Light mode under Settings > Personalization > Colors to restore light window backgrounds and borders.
Restore the normal colors
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Personalization > Colors.
- Open Choose your mode and select Light. Windows and supported apps should immediately return to light backgrounds. ^1^
If the screen still has unusually black backgrounds or extreme colors:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- Set Contrast themes to None.
- Select Apply. ^2^
Then check for a color filter:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.
- Turn Color filters Off. Filters—particularly Inverted—can reverse the normal screen colors. ^3^
If only Word, Excel, or Outlook remains black
Microsoft 365 applications can have a theme separate from Windows:
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Select File > Options > General.
- Under Office Theme, choose White, Colorful, or Use system setting. ^4^
